Posted - Apr 28 2011 : 10:02:55 AM Well, I don't have a barn. And since I am pretty firmly planted in suburbia, I probably never will. But a girl can dream!
We do have a shed in the back yard. After taking me on a driving tour of barn quilts in our area, my DH offered to cut plywood and prime it for me so I could paint my own quilt patch. The shed is on the edge of our garden so it has a bit of a farm feel to it (ok, not really, but it's all I've got!)
As soon as we get a break in the spring rain, I am going to get this done. I just wish I could decide what block to do!
Has anyone else made a barn quilt, or perhaps a shed quilt if that's all you've got?
Sarah

Posted - Aug 23 2011 : 07:40:03 AM Wow, that is one pretty quilt square! The paint I used were small sample pots of paint colors, I think it was Legend? Or Dutch Boy? Anyway, it was those $2 sample pots you can buy, which last a LONG time. After I was done, I coated everything with a spray of polyurethane. So far, it is lasting through a couple seasons of weather.

I finally got my barn (shed) quilt finished. I started out making a Night and Noon block but my husband kept making suggested changes, so this is how it ended up! Now I'm thinking about making a larger one for the side of the house. |

Thanks, Liz... is your quilt exposed to weather?.. or is it inside & protected?.. in my research online, I've discovered that external latex paint is recommended if the barn quilt is outdoors... & Cris, in your blog, you said you got your paint at the hardware store... what kind of paint was it?..
Sorry for so many questions, I just want it to work out okay... thanks!..

Posted - Jun 09 2011 : 07:17:06 AM Thanks, Cris... I think the cactus scene would be easy enough if I don't try to get too artsy & just keep it simple, not too much detail... in other words, just like a quilt would be... I really do like the other one too, but for my friend, I wanted to do something special... thankfully, I haven't promised him a date of completion!..
Thanks again for your input!..

Posted - Jun 08 2011 : 09:42:19 AM Love the design ideas, LeslieAnn! From my experience painting my shed quilt squares, it is easier to do straight lines if you want to use painters tape. I'm not a good artistic painter, but if you are, the cacti design would be incredible! I need to stick to the basics (anything more difficult than blobbing on paint is beyond me...)

Posted - Jun 08 2011 : 06:47:24 AM I woke up this morning thinking about my shed quilt, planning it out in my head... gotta get started on it!.. I'm wondering if my idea is a little too ambitious for a first try... maybe I should do something simpler first... I suppose it would depend on how artistic I think I am!!!.. here's more or less what I want the center of the block to look like, except with a little brighter colors, then I'll add a border of southwest-style shapes...
What do y'all think?..

Posted - Jun 03 2011 : 12:00:10 PM Hi girls! I did this! Well, it went up on my new-to-me shed about a year ago, which now is my chicken brooder/grow out house for meat birds and new laying hens (right now, I have 20+ future laying hens in there, about four weeks old). I got a new computer, and so can't find the old pics, but if you go to my blog (www.chickenladysgreatadventures.blogspot.com) and look under April 2010 posts, you'll see a sequence of pics showing how I did it. (I ended up with FOUR quilt squares, I couldn't stop at just one!)

Posted - Jun 03 2011 : 09:19:12 AM We are planning a trip to Kentucky this summer and I have been reading about the barn quilt tour. I was thinking why don't other people do this and now I see they are. I think a shed quilt will be a fun summer project. Thanks for the post, I am looking forward to pictures. Cathy

I found that the brighter the colors the prettier they are even if not close up they will look good from a distant. the bear paw was the easiest. It took my whole family and a hay wagon and two ladders to get the big one up but I smile every time I come up the road and see it.
