My family and I are looking to move to a bigger property in a more northerly location. My husband really likes NE but I have never even been through the state. Any NE farmgirls out there who could give me some info about the area? Besides 5 years spent in AZ, we have lived our whole lives in the east. What is it like gardening, farming, caring for livestock, etc. in the Plains states? Most especially, what is the weather like? Is it as extreme as I have heard?

Lori,
Nebraska has tornados and its share of bad weather. This winter was mild compared to last years which was extremely bad. Our spring this year so far has been very cool and rainy. More than likely when it does decide to stay it will go from cold to warm in a flash. I think your idea of prayer is good for wherver you go.

You're probably right. Bad weather is everywhere. A great prayer policy is definitely the best way to go ;)

To be honest, everywhere has it's disaster hazards. I've had tornado warnings in Salem Oregon, and I had a tornado WITHOUT warning rip through my neighborhood just out of phoenix last year, several flash floods--- I figure if the houses I'm looking at have been standing for 30, 50, 100 years They'll probably stand for 30 more. I intend to carry a good insurance policy and a good prayer policy :D

Thanks for the encouragement! Missouri is also one of our choices, but we don't like the tornado aspect.
Does Nebraska get any tornadoes? How bad are the winters in terms of blizzards and very low temperatures?

I just did this type of thread last week and I've been sold on Missouri as the most farm for my money with decent weather. This stage of planning is so much fun! Best of luck to you Lori!

I live in Nebraska in the eastern part. We have a small acreage. We raise livestock and this year I am beginning a garden. Nebraska has all four seasons. Although spring has not made it here for keeps just yet. The farmers are itchy to get in the fields. Most crops grow in Nebraska. There is corn, wheat, soybeans, sugar beats...to name a few. My county is known for raising beef and pigs. I don't think of us as extreme at all. Western nebraska has fewer towns and is mostly ranching. There are the sandunes and eastern nebraska is very hilly in places and good for farming. I have lived here over 20 years and while it took me a bit...I am a true Texas girl...I have come to love it.
