For the most part, my house is filled with Walmart decorating things.
I want to make our bedroom a place that is relaxing but also beautiful and pulled together looking.
When you are shopping for bedding, window treatments, etc. Where do you go first?
I never did find the "pink" that I was hoping for. How do you find material that fits in a bedroom. What things are best for window treatment...cost effectiveness in mind.
I am on a wicked TIGHT budget, but want to have at least one room that looks like it was picked off the display floor of Home Beautiful! :)
Is this possible or just a pipe dream?

Kathy- that top to your stove sounds amazing! Have you gotten it yet?
Jessie- I know what you mean about being tight! I bought cheap sheets and then bought a small amount of nicer fabric to make a border at the top and some homemade ties and those became our curtains for a long time. It worked out pretty well for my first ever sewing attempt! :D

Jessie, Wicked tight budget...I hear ya! I have a notebook that I have had for years that I taped or stapled pictures of what I want into. I can jot down ideas or websites or tuck in business cards for future reference. It is really important to know what you want, so when you see it at a garage sale you can envision it repainted or repurposed for what you want.
Recently, we replaced our wood stove. In my notebook, I had several photos of soapstone stoves, but they were way out of our budget. My husband chatted up a local granite business and found out that they can cut remnants of soapstone, bevel the edges and actually cut the front in an arc so the stone has a flirty little curve to it and fit it to the top of our new stove. For about $150.00. LOTS cheaper than a soapstone stove, but with the same effect.
It is challenging to find your hearts' desire on a budget. The secret is to love the challenge...but that comes with practice. I don't think it comes easy to any of us at first! Just know for sure what you want and keep your eyes open and Hooray! you'll find it! Good luck and have fun with it all

I too live on a tight budget and I can tell you what we did ( do)... I get a magazine a find a room I really like and then try and reproduce it in our room... Thrift stores, yard sales, clearance aisles ( some times walmart some times dollar tree even!). I figure out what I can absolutely do myself
we also think outside the box for things. Our bedroom window treatments are 2.00 shades from the habitat Restore cleaned and repainted. Covering those are a lace table cloth pulled to the side ( hung by cup holders with a bit of grape vine) and held in place by a big silk flower secured with a hair tie ... the other window has the same thing only across the top of it on a dowel rod I have doilies and embroidered finger tip towels.. to hang the clothes we painted a piece of board and attached glass door pulls... I spray painted an old chair a soft color and made a super simple chair cushion to match the covers I made for the bed pillows....the head board is simply a large picture across the back of the bed that MIL gave us years ago. Our side tables for the bed are two old chairs . I crocheted doilies for the back and found large round baskets at the thrift store ( the kind everyone gets the sausage and cheese in at Christmas time) and I filled my side with a doll, a couple books, lotion.. dh has books, alarm clock and a smaller basket to hold his guitar picks... ....
Don't quit dreaming.... just keeping moving forward.... I can't wait to see what YOU come up with!

I've heard of several people using painting drop cloths (the fabric ones)as inexpensive drapery/upholstery material. Been wanting to try that myself. One blogger recommends bleaching them first. Don't see why you couldn't then dye them to whatever color you're wanting. I also like the idea of finding a picture of the designer room you want then looking for similar pieces at 2nd hand stores. Good luck on your project, you'll have to post a picture when you get it done.

At Lowe's or places like that, they have mixed paint for sale that is real cheap. You have to ask to see it. Maybe painting your room would give it a nice fresh look.

Don't give up the dream! I found expensive Egyptian cotton, 300 ct. sateen finish, embroydered sheets at Penneys after-Christmas white sale a few years ago. They were roughly 1/3 the original price. I bought 4 sets! I figure they will last the rest of my life. I considered it an investment, and considering the economy, they're probably better than money in the bank! I squirreled back a dollar here and there, saved like crazy to get those sheets, but everytime I slide into bed, they are worth it.
A trick I learned years ago, I cut out pictures from every magazine I find, pictures of kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, etc. I have a firm idea, an image of what I want it to look like. Over the years, I have gone back and find that some of those rooms have actually materialized in my home. It cements the visual in your mind, so when you are at a sale, a thrift store, a yard sale, you can see what you're searching for. It may take a while, but you will find it taking shape.
Another way to make it happen is to ask for specific items or gift cards for them at holiday time. If I know there's something I want at a specific store, I'll ask for a gift card to that store. Between your own saving and the generosity of others, you'll get there. Never give up the dream!!
