At lunch today, I was talking with two other teachers from my team (we have a LARGE school, and 7 of us are on a team--there are 5 teams of teachers just for K-2, we have over 1,000 students at our school)....we all want farms! Another teacher (who is very "citygirl") said she doesn't want any animals, "what if you want to go somewhere?" LOL Anyway, "if" we all ever get little farms, we decided that if any of us went out of town, we'd help take care of each others' animals! :) It's so cool to dream with co-workers, who still want to teach for a living, but also have dreams of a life on the farm too.

BTW--I just found out that a pretty little place down the street from us is going to be vacant soon, and they're getting out of a rent/own option... We've been hoping we can maybe look into getting in to a rent/own option, and this place would be perfect for us. We could have chickens and maybe a couple of goats, it's on a little over an acre (similar size to our current lot) but the house is far from the road and there's LOTS of room for gardens and such too. Any prayers or positive thoughts you want to send our way would be appreciated, we'd love to have a place just like that! (Big enough to do "farm" stuff on, but still located in our "suburban" area and not too big to manage with both of us working full-time and being ultra involved in school, church and extracurricular activities with our kids, and trying to take classes too.)

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

Yup, the land is soooo expensive right now, we're not looking to get into a loan ATM! LOL I just drove through our subdivision (all lots are around an acre or more) and there are at least two other places for rent or RTO, so there are plenty of options out there, at least it seems so.

I'm just happy that school's out for the summer and I have time to spend with my kids and get some projects done (and catch up on all kinds of things).

If the landlord wants to do a rent/own option, why not ask if he is willing to sell it?

Do be very careful with rent/own options. A lot of people, on both sides (landlords and tenants) have been badly burned by these. Talk to an attorney first. Please.

Sounds lovely, I will keep my fingers crossed for you. :)

EDIT: I just realzed it was you, Katie, after I submitted the post! N/M on trying to get a loan out there! YIKES! But do talk to an atty about the rent to own thing. ;)

The funny thing is that our (elementary) school has over a thousand kids and we live in a super-fast growing suburb of Tampa.... None of us want to move away, we want to stay at our school AND have a farm, and stay connected to "suburbia" to an extent too! That's what cracks me up!

Katee, sounds like your school set-up with like-minded folks is really satisfying. I'll be praying for the new home and your farming goals. My husband hears more and more about my critter goals and last night asked me if I'm really serious. He said all the fencing and buildings will be time-consuming and sounds like a retirement plan....! Well, we've been talking about the possiblilties of his retiring early.

Yep, that's what we'd like to do (both my family, and my teacher friends)... Our neighbor across the road from us (and down a bit) when I was growing up had a vegetable farm/stand in the summer and he was a teacher and his wife was a newspaper reporter. They had a pretty good little life going there. I'd love to have the simple life like they did....someday! As long as my husband is working two jobs, I'm sure he won't have much time to "farm" but we hope to when we can buy our own place and have a little bit of land with it.

I taught school 18 years , The last 6 I was a weekend farmer. With summers off it is possible to do a little farming and still teach. I know several other farmers who teach and have small farms. Many of them have the goal of farming full time when they retire. I taught in private christian school and had no retirement built up so when we adopeded our 2 kids it seemed the right time for me to stop teaching and put more time into the farm. My husband still works a full time job and we hope one day he too can work the farm full time.
As for my teaching I still get to teach workshops on farming , garlic and cooking. Also this fall I will start homeschooling my son.

I'm currently an instructional assistant in grades K-2. I'm working on getting certified, but have to take some classes first. (I used to teach at a private school that didn't require the same stuff for certification there.)

We're in suburbia near Tampa, but there are still a ton of cattle and chicken farms around here...for awhile anyway. (It's slowly being developed and "rural" is being pushed further away.)

Hi Katee. Sounds like a great place, hope you get it. It is especially nice to still be close to it all. We live miles form a big town and so , spend much of our time driving to and from. It nice that your co-workers also share your dream of a farm. What grade do you teach? I taught pre-k to K and then special ed at the middle school level. now i work part time at 2 jobs, one for a fire truck company and then on my own shoppe. hopefully i will only have to work on my shoppe.

good luck on the new place!

blessings
