I live in East Texas and going to redo my kitchen cabinets and trying to decide to paint them or leave them stained. My walls are wood paneling and counter top is blue. Can any one help decide which to do been thinking about more country style or either western I need help to make up my mind. Pleaseeeeeeeee Help!!!!! |

if your kitchen is a galley kitchen, do you even have that much wall showing?? is the wood paneling dark or light? what kind of wood and how dark or light are the cabinets? with the blue counter-top, how would a blue and white checkered tile back splash look? glossy tile would "bounce light" back into the area. what is on your floor? what about a throw rug? (one that you could throw in the washer) ...just some ideas...

Whatever color you decide on for the cabinets, I would go with something light-colored. It will make a galley kitchen look bigger. I like the country/cowboys drawer pull idea.

Sue: For the door and drawer pulls, there are now pulls shaped like a cowboy hat, spurs, chickens, oak leaves (I have that), belt buckles like, etc...
It gives the doors and drawers a country/cowboy look. Really nice.

The paneling is real wood so painting I just am thinking stay with the cabinets. I have one window and a door leading out side this kitchen is what they call a galley kitchen. Pictures I have up are of cows and deer and horses. I have big one of my husband on horseback working cows with the dogs. I have a curtain that is red plaid on the window. |

I would only paint the paneling if it was the "cheaper stuff", not real wood. My sister painted hers - I helped her and it really brightened up the room. You will need a good coat of primer. Over the years the kitchen walls develop a greasy build up. If your cabinets have an inner panel that can come out you can place chicken wire in the space. Then if you donn't like open cabinets fabric can go behind the chicken wire. You can remove a cabinet door or two and then have shelves. If you do the shelf idea you can paint the back of the shelf an accent color. This is a great way to show of your mixing bowls, vases, glass wear, cookbooks, pottery, plants..... Do you have any windows in your kitchen? For inspiration I look at fabric. It can be a tablecloth, a dress, yardage, anything. You can see the different colors working together. Tell us more of what you like. Then we can throw more ideas your way. Barbara

how would the wood paneling look if you painted that? i've seen where someone painted paneling white, with a little gloss, it brightens up the room and gives it a rustic look. depending on how bad your cabinets are (sorry, don't mean to sound negative), but if the finish on your cabinets isn't really bad, perhaps changing the knobs to a white glass would also brighten up the room. i like the idea of then bringing in some yellow, perhaps in the curtains?? any maybe you have an old red coffee pot??! |

how about painting the cabinets off white, then painting a blue bandana design on them...

Try a bluewash. We took yellow paint and thinned it out with water (water based paint) and painted one coat on some cabinets once. You could see the wood through the paint. It was kinda cool, till we couldn't match our yellow plates anymore. Now we're lookin for a new color for the kitchen.
