Hi all! I just joined Mary Jane's yesterday! My joining has been a long process. I subscribed to the magazine about 6 months ago and read it here and there. Then one day I went back and really read it, boy was I pleasantly suprised! Now I devour it whenever it comes. I just bought some back issues that I'm going over. I've come to realize that this is what has been missing in my life for decades! I long for the country! I have always had a great love for animals and so I put it aside to "fit in" and raise my kids but there has always been this yearning that would not go away. So last year I bought chickens and have been raising them in the backyard and started a garden. Then came two horses (which we board) and now we are raising rabbits. Well even this is not enough. I have been buying milk and beef at a local farm and Love it! I see the difference in my health and the health of my children. Now for the big move. I have been cleaning up the house and trying to get it prepared to put on the market. I long for land! It has become an obsession with me. So my goal for 2010 is to find a piece of property and move out there. All the stories posted on this site about being a farm girl whether suburban or urban have inspired me to go for my version. Thanks ladies!

Veronica, I'll add my welcome...from The Cowboy State of Wyoming. The farmgirl flock is made up of a herd of good-hearted gals in hard pursuit of the American Dream...'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness'. The farmgirl mindset fine tunes and clarifies the journey in many ways...in my opinion. It sounds like you're well on your way. Enjoy. I am still newish to this forum, but I always feel like I'm in a room full of friends here.

Well I am amazed! I've joined chats before and you enter your info put yourself out there and no one acknowledges you. So I thought it would be the same here. I'm so glad I was WRONG! Thank you for acknowledging me, that in and of itself feels great! I've started reading Joe Stalin's book about farming so that I could get more information (info-holic)and it was an eye opener for me. I romanticized farming and living in the country. Now I have a better view of it. So, I'm taking his advice and while I am living in town with a medium backyard I decided to farm where I'm planted :-) My daughter and I enlarged the garden and we are starting herbs. Both my girls are reading about herbs and how to make concoctions and having FUN! WOW We processed chickens for the 2nd time yesterday. It still gets me to take the life of an animal. The kids really helped me this time and I'm very proud of them. We only did 4 but that was all I could handle. Now we have baby bunnies and it's so good to have babies in the house! It's a great feeling of rejuvenation and hope. I am so excited to belong to this group now and I will be corresponding and 'chatting' with all of you! Have a blessed and hope-filled day!

Hello There. I understand exactly what you mean. I live in a very suburban area, but within a ten minute drive in any direction there are farms. One of my favorite things to do is drive along these back roads and admire the wonderful barns, homes, land, and animals managed and owned by some of the hardest working people I've come across. I too make it a point to buy from those that sell their meat, vegetables, milk, and eggs - anything to support them and their land. I continue to hope and dream that one day my family and I will own a small farm of our own to cherish, nuture, and care for.

Welcome, and I know what you mean my DH and I bought 3 acres in NC three years ago, we longed for land, and a dream of a hobby farm.. it has a 100 yr old barn on it and a 100 year old farm house... we sneak away when ever we can: and stay as long ase we can... as we live in Fl. It is our goal to sell and move too.. I thought we would be there by now but the market took a turn and we are still here but still dreaming.
