We spent about 4 1/2 hours at our farm today. I cut limbs and brush along the gravel/dirt road back to the building site, and after I finished all the stuff I could reach, I went up to the building site and helped clear stuff there while dh mowed a yard and edged. We also took a truck & trailer load of outdoor stuff and unpacked that -- our lawn furniture, planters, & that sort of stuff.
I'm worn out, but it's a good worn out :)
Tomorrow I have to get a bunch of stuff boxed up while dh is at work. I'll be so glad to get all of this stuff packed up and into storage!

We keep a few pigs and know how aromatic they are!!
(Although at $300 for each organic hog we raise, it's also the smell of sustainability)

We're hoping to have the basement poured within the month, because until we're in the basement we'll be living in a tent! My dd is going to stay with my mother and finish out the school year, and hopefully we'll be in the basement by the time she gets out of school. The building site was pretty much determined when we first looked at the land -- there's electricity and phone lines already to a fairly-cleared building site on a slight rise at the far back of the 47 acres, and the two wells are already there. The barn, animals, etc. will be down the slight hill and to the North of the house. The builder, etc., who have looked at the site say it's perfect for what we're planning, so we're pretty set on that site.
I know what you mean about the scent, though. My in-laws live a mile or so from their best friends, who are pig farmers. Depending on which way the wind is blowing on the day they clean out the area under the pens (the baby pigs are kept in a building with some sort of drainage system or something under the pens), it's horrible to be out in their yard. Mil can't hang out laundry or leave her windows open those days. The first time I was there on one of those days I was shocked at how vile it smelled.
We don't plan to have too many animals, though, so hopefully it won't be a problem. We're not putting out anything permanent or even semi-permanent (outbuildings, etc.) for at least a year (due to money and building the house first), so those are things we'll have to carefully consider.

Patti - That kind of tired is SO rewarding!!
How soon do you think you'll build? One thing I always advise is to stay on your land for a full year before you build or put in gardens/orchards, etc. Although it wouldn't be very practical for you unless you have some sort of mobilhome/travel trailer for the winter or are willing to really rough it for a year.
That way you know how your land drains during storms, where the best sun is for gardens, which way the wind predominantly blows from (you don't want to smell that barn no matter how much you love those animals!)

Oh, what a wonderful kind of sore to be! I'm so glad to hear that you are starting to work on the farm. I bet the visions on your head are just swarming. Have you figured out what you are doing for living space? You may have said and I just missed it, so I'm sorry if I'm asking a question that has already been asked. The last I heard you were still looking for a wall-tent, is that what it's called?
I'll try to pay better attention, I've been a little pre-occupied with sick grandkids, holidays and wedding showers and such. I know it's no different than anyone else, just different stuff.
Looking forward to hearing all about your trip and your farm. Nothing a good hot soak in the clawfoot tub won't solve. :o) Blessings on all you are doing.

I know you have to tired but I just thought as I was reading your post what a "blessing" it was that you had time to do all this because you wouldn't if you still had to teach! Enjoy this special time, it is like starting a new adventure.
