Posted - Oct 06 2009 : 6:22:55 PM I will always be so grateful to dh for going back home with me and setting us up out in the middle of nowhere - well not exactly the middle, but far enough from development for us
the house - 2 36' Natural Spaces Domes. The overgrown paths actually make a peace sign with our odd shaped porch making the angles
and the barns - big barn is storage and the red barn is for the goat (left) and chickens (right). The gardens were full straw bales last year, but they have smooshed in nicely.
We sit right in the middle of an 80 acre plot. Behind the barn, toward the road is a 40 acre field. Behind the house is all woods with a pretty ravine. When we moved in we found an acre of overgrown blueberries, which have since been cleaned out - yum! and there are apple trees all over the property, probably 30-40
Thanks for checking us out :) Sarah

Posted - Oct 15 2009 : 5:27:40 PM Sarah, thanks for the close up pic of the white table I inquired about. Mine is extremely similar, except the top is solid, and the edges are turned up about an inch, like a tray.

Posted - Oct 15 2009 : 1:43:23 PM It is old Hosanna and I believe it's wrought iron. It is one of a set of three from my husband's grandparents or great grandparents. I'll see if I can find a close up for you. It was used at a lakeside cottage (on the porch I think) from the 30's/40's until we brought it home.
Thanks Michele, where is Brethren?
not the best picture, (yes that is an upside down head of a cabbage patch doll on top) but this is another of the set

Posted - Oct 15 2009 : 09:24:23 AM I was looking closely at the photo of your garden next to the red barn, and I noted a small white table there..... is is wrought iron? Is it old? I found a similar table (I think) in a barn on our property. Except, it is unpainted. I was unsure of what it is or what it's use is..... and I had never seen one till I looked at your pic. Could you post a close up of it so I can see if I have the same thing? or email me a pic?

Posted - Oct 14 2009 : 05:54:40 AM Hi Sarah, I am the manager of our county Soil Conservation District and we design living snow fence for just that purpose. We recommend at least 3 rows of trees to help keep the snow back and believe me it does work. Here in North Dakota we get alot of wind in the winter and I have seen roads kept clean just because people have trees in the right place, my own driveway is 1/2 mile and I never have problems because of the trees we planted 6 years ago. It doesn't take up all that much room in a field, the farmer just has to be careful when he sprays his crop to keep back a safe distance and if it is cropland there could possibly be some cost-share available to you to help plant the trees, just check with your local SCD. Hope that helps.
Julie

Kris the barn was a Heritage I think. I would love to get it cleaned out and use the upstairs for a farm shop. My parents have neighbors who put up the same kind of barn and finished off the upstairs and live in it very cozily right above their horses :)
Susan I would love the blueberry buckle recipe. We haven't been selling, just freezing lots ;) Your house sounds cool too, we ooked at del-tec round houses before deciding on ours.
We didn't blog as we were building - too pooped, but I've been trying to get some photos of our process together, they can be seen at http://symbioticacresdomes-gr8tfulmom.blogspot.com/
Dh worked as the general for the first half of building, then following a falling out with our head dude I took over. It was the longest 9 months of my life, but Oh did I learn a ton!

Posted - Oct 11 2009 : 1:55:35 PM Love your place! Even without the peace sign path its the picture of peace.
Growing up in the country I spent my college years in town and knew I needed to be in back in the country. Town was never "home". I envy your blueberries! If you're interested I've got a great Blueberry Buckle recipe. Do you sell berries or apples at a farmer's market?
DH wanted a dome house when we were building 30 years ago, but we decided on at octagon, 35 ft diameter main floor, about 25" second floor. We had to add rooms on 3 sides when DH's mom moved in and we had 3 kids. Like Kristen, I'd love to see the inside!

Posted - Oct 11 2009 : 04:23:36 AM Thanks Kim. I checked out your blog, you have some beautiful scenery there and the Tortilla Soup & cornbread sound yummy!
Question - We have a pretty long drive (about 1/4 mile) and I have been thinking about planting a snowbreak of pines - problem being that to get the desired result the row will have to be out in the middle of the field. Something my farming brother would not be too happy about, but man the drifts we get about halfway are a pain. What do you all do for windbreak/windrow/snow control planting?
