Today was a very busy day here. My SIL started cutting down all the cedar trees along the driveway today. He had to take down the chain link fence. There were probably 20 cedars he cut today. There are still about 15 more to cut. Big ones. They were shading the pear trees and the gardens. They were just too big. And then the sun never could dry underneath them so the ground stays sopping wet. This will help that problem. Plus I'd much rather have apple trees. ANd I can plant some more maples and redbuds now.

I finally got the fence back up around the garden that I have needed to do for a few months now. So that's done. It needs barbed wire across the top of the shorter fence, but that can wait. I'll be putting goat kids up there in a month or so and it will have to be done then.

And we got all but 2 of the kids disbudded this afternoon. That's a job. I was worn out. I know Kendra was. 11 sets of horns. One was too big to do so he'll just have to have horns. We castrated him. And the smallest doeling was too small to do today. I'll have to take her in a few weeks. And we castrated 5 bucklings. Awful job. I just had to hold the poor guys. It was awful, but all done and they will all be fine tomorrow.

I also washed 4 loads of clothes and hung them all out. They were dry in no time despite the fact that it was freezing today. The sun was out and the wind was breezy. But cold here.

So I am pooped and cold. BBRRR! It's cold tonight.

Kris

Cherry,
I started out last year with 1 beehive. But we lost it over the winter...we (my husband and I) didnt know what we were doing. This spring we took a beginners class and joined the local beekeepers club. They are the most wonderful people and a wealth of information. So this year we are doing 3 hives. I went out there to check on them a few days ago and was shocked at how much wax and honey they have made in such a short time.
I wish we would have planted fruit trees like Kristin suggested ,when we moved in 10 years ago...but we have had a late start on our own dreams. We raised 4 kids his, hers and ours. His kids always had issues and we felt like our life was dictated by exs. Then my husband fell out of a tree on a hunting trip and that set us back for a while. So better late then never! We do have wild blackberries and a persimmon tree and some wild grapes. One really nice lady I work with is teaching me to crochet. I have a stong desire to paint everything we own...all this old crappy furniture is getting a good coat of paint and some wood glue. I like recycleing better then buying new.
Well thats it for now...hope everyone has a nice holiday weekend.

*snort* Oh my gosh- Corn! *snortlaughcough* Oh Kristin! Don't do that to me with out warning! My eyes are tearing up over hear! The poor dear! What a beautiful name too!

Want to hear my funny name story? I am the youngest of 4 girls. One day my dad was frustrated and trying to get my attention and he said:

"Jennifer! I mean Sara! I mean Heather! I mean Cricket (the dog)! I mean Seanee (the other dog)! I mean ALYSSA!"

ROFL! I couldn't decide whether to be offended or laugh!

Cherry, my DD has 3 girls. Chloe, Coryn and Kansas. Chloe will be 10 May 27. Coryn turned 7 in November and Kansas just turned 6 in April. Love those grands! My hubby has a son from a way previous mess up. He is 34 I think. Married in Indiana with 2 kids, Allison, 13 and Ben, 7 also. And now I have 2 step grands, too. Chelsea, 13 and Eric, 11. They live in S. Ga. My Abby has no kids, thank goodness. She has a stupid big baby boyfriend she's had for years that she breaks up with then gets back together with and I'm tired of him. He's a big spoiled baby who likes big expensive boy toys. I don't like the boy, can ya tell? I know she could do so much better and she needs to stop wasting her time with him. Enough of that.

And when all 3 of Heather's are together I cannot get their names right. Poor Coryn ends up being called canned corn, and that's not good. It's hard to say names that all start with the same sound. I don't know how the Dugger's do it with all those J names.

I did just finish a good book the other day. I don't know about ya'll, but bathroom reading is great. Most people wouldn't admit to that. But I do it.

Oh, Kris, I love Kansas' name! You have Chloe (we have one of those, too) and Kansas, are they the only two grandbabies you have? Don't know when you're gonna find the time to read your new books!

And welcome, Melissa! I want bees myself. I'd love to talk more with you about them. Did you start out with three hives or one? I've only seen one lonely honeybee to visit my garden so far this year. It makes me sad. Oh! And I love NC! Which part of the state do you live in?

I did go to the thrift store today and found 3 good books. Thanks for the suggestion. I will do that later after I push myself out the door to plant a flat of tomato plants. I am not looking forward to that. I did all the tilling yesterday and planted more beans, peas and corn. That's easy because I have a seeder. So easy. But the plants are time consuming and lots of bending which I am not fond of doing. I have a granddaughter that's my picker upper. When I drop something I call Kansas to pick it up for me. She just turned 6 and she's just the right height to pick stuff up. Everyone needs one of these picker uppers around. She's a great help. She does like to garden, too.

Wow Kristin! Monday was certainly a PRODUCTIVE day to say the least. How sweet of your SIL to help out so much. I think you need to relax with a good book, a glass of Iced Tea (unless it's cold today too!) and then treat yourself to a nice bath :)

Welcome to the forum, Melissa. 2 1/2 acres is alot. I have a little over 3. And all full up with something. Animals and gardens. Even get to use my neighbors pasture for the 2 cow babies. So you can do alot of things on a little bit of land. But start small. Don't get in a hurry. Except to plant fruit trees. I wish we had planted more when we moved here almost 5 years ago. That should be the first thing to do after moving is to plant fruit trees. I would love to have a few bee hives here, too. One day we will.

How long have ya'll lived there?

Hi Ladies....Im new to MJF and I have always wanted to live on a farm. I'll have to settle for the 2 1/2 acres in the more rural part of the burbs. All I have going on right now is 3 bee hives. I took up beekeeping last year and expanded this year. I love it! Thats how I found MJF, I was in the book store when I saw the issue on bees. Well then I fell in love with the magazine and really want to be a part of this whole thing. Thanks for including me! Well I could use some tips on easy thing to do to ease into the farmgirl lifestyle. Thanks for your ideas. Melissa

Cindy, that was really neat to actually talk to you, too. I love all the talking here but to really talk on the phone or face to face is much better. Enjoy that nice weather. It's cold here again tonight.

Alee, I want a hammock under trees, too. That sounds so nice. Except it's too hard for me to sit outside without seeing something that needs to be done. I would need blinders, too.

Kris,it was great talking to you yesterday!!
It must feel like tons have been accomplished just in getting those trees cut down and hauled off. I'm sure you have a whole new outlook on life, so to speak. I know when we get something done around here that's needed doing for a while, it sure makes you feel uplifted!

You didn't have to change weather with me, it was beautifully sunny and warm yesterday in mid to high 80's and now we are very overcast, cool and windy getting ready for another storm.

Yes, my SIL is great. He's a bit older than my DD by about 14 years. But that's a good thing for her. He's also the type that can't sit still. He's always got to be doing something. I have not mowed my yard yet this year. He does it. He weed eats, too!!! My hubby has a few times but it just wears the poor old guy out these days. I did get hubby to weed eat around the electric fence out back last time he was home. But that only needs to be done about twice a year.

SIL works for a guy that has all the heavy equipment and had lots of help, too. And we gave him the trees to sell because my DD is being taken to court by her evil x. Long story there. So we let him have all the cedar he wants to cut for the money for a lawyer. I hope he gets alot for them. There are still about 15 or so left to go. And it did smell good, like Christmas. So nice. I need to rent a shredder now and use the cedar for mulch around the house.

I have the windows open today. It's the most beautiful day here. I hope your day goes well.

Kris, I am so thankful you have such a good SIL who will help you! I bet it smelled wonderful around your little farm yesterday with the scent of cedar in the air! You could make some money if you can find a furniture man to buy them from you. Cedar makes wonderful outdoor furniture.

It's been cold here, too. So weird. Usually it's cold the first week in May, not the third! We've had to run the heat for a little bit in the mornings to take the chill off the house. So, true, those emails I've seen that say "you know you live in the South when you run your heat and air in the same day"! But we have sunshine, beautiful sunshine! So I'm not complaining!

I know about those weeds. I think you need a big ole wheelbarrow for a gift. Carrying weeds is no fun. You have been very busy too. That's not my favorite job at all. I hate weeds but I figure some of them are good, so they get to stay. But I think I'll invest in that flame weeder soon.

I have days where I work all day and others when I don't even want to go out there. It's a beautiful day today and I'm totally out of cat food, almost out of dog food and chicken food. So it's off to town today. After I go pick thousands of strawberries, though.

Have a good day! Kris

Oh my gosh Kristin! Can you PLEASE share some of your energy. I got pretty much nothing done today- I have a migraine coming on and it always saps my energy. I got the back yard mowed and some digging of weeds done but that is it. If I don't dig on the weeds every day- they start to look at me like I am lunch!
