After spending the first 41 years of my life as a city girl, I probably get a little too excited about all of this farming stuff. We picked up our hens and rooster Saturday morning and have gotten 8-10 eggs a day since. Hubby bought seven more pullets while picking up feed for the chickens, so those are in the brooder now that the ducks have moved out. This is so much fun! My kids run to the chicken coop every morning to check on the chickens and let them out for the day. They have the run of the yard until night when we lock them up in the coop.

Have fun with those girls. I have 25 out back that are not quite ready to start supplying us with daily eggs. But I did stockpile eggs from our older hens before I gave them away. You will be amazed at all you can do with eggs, sell any leftovers too, but be sure to keep some back for the winter months.

Some friends of mine who had chickens who produced quite a bit make something called a "Strata" with their extra eggs. It's like a super deluxe type of quiche.

That's so great, Kelli! What I want to know is...what are you doing with all of those eggs? Is it omelets for breakfast, egg salad sandwiches for lunch and souffle for dinner? Inquiring minds want to know!

That's just the most wonderful feeling to get your own eggs, huh? Aren't you glad you're a farmgirl?! My five hens give us lovely eggs and in turn, I spoil them with tasty treats like potato an apple peels, broccoli and fruit. It's a nice thing to care for yoru own food.

Sue -- yep. The green ones taste the same as all the others. However, there is a flavor difference between store bought and farm fresh. Farm fresh are by far the best.

i think martha stewart puts them in her magazine sometimes, yes, they are pretty.....but do they taste the same....as in: can you use them for scrambled eggs on sunday morning?! or in baking a cake?! a guy at the flea market was selling chics and said something about .."....red' ones....he had red ones, black, and then golden/yellow ones.....they are sooooo cute!

Sue, the Americanas lay the light green (easter, or I call them Martha Stewart eggs). My sister has some and they are so pretty. She wants some silky chickens now so I am hoping to get her some.

what kind of chickens do you have?? i've just started reading about them and some are better at laying eggs and some are better for meat...however, i could NOT eat a pet/chicken!!! so.....i'd rather get a few for laying eggs. i'm so excited for you......i enjoy reading about people doing what i eventually want to do.....(hope that doesn't sound too weird!!)

Kelli, that's wonderful. We had chickens when I was a kid and a lot of them. We would sell the eggs. I was never excited about having to go collect the eggs. However, now that I'm older and have moved back to the country, I love getting eggs. It feels like "free food". I get the same way when I get the fruit off the trees.

Ah, Kelli, trust me. I've had my chickens for five years, and I still get excited about picking up the eggs! Now, if I can just get that Jersey cow, so I can have fresh milk and butter......POUND CAKE!

That is wonderful! When I get my own place after college, I really hope to have a chicken coop and keep laying hens.
