Posted - Feb 24 2009 : 4:50:38 PM Hello, I'm new...again to MJF and new to this forum. We have a small, less than 30 acre farm in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest VA where I raise rare breed, hypoallergenic American Curly horses and rare, primitive breed Shetland sheep, Merino, Romney and crossbred sheep. Using the wool and, sometimes, the Curly fiber I spin, knit, weave, felt to make warm clothing. Dave and I moved here almost 14 years ago and the deal was I would work the farm and he would support me. We both love living here and I love doing all the work. When I need help there are young men in the valley who are always willing to earn extra money. It works for us but there's no power struggle because we both recognize there has to be a boss and we figure the boss is the one who earns the money for us to live here. That's Dave. It's an old fashioned marriage but it works for us because we, usually, each put the other first. It's a contest, you see, but we both win -smile-. Is it okay to tell about a farm for sale? It's not my farm, it belongs to my brother and all I'm doing is passing the word, I won't gain any benefit...other than seeing my brother happy about selling his farm.

Posted - Mar 10 2009 : 05:17:16 AM Thanks Tracy, my brother has had it on the market for a few weeks and has a few hits. He wants to move to warmer climes but it's a great place if one likes winter sports. While he doesn't have a ski lift -wry grin-, he does have some excellent cross country skiing and a l-o-n-g hill that would be great for downhill skiing. Then, there's all that exercise one would get from clearing the half mile driveway...Steve has found out he's not a fan of extremely cold weather.

Posted - Mar 01 2009 : 2:04:20 PM Hi Fawn, sounds good, I told Steve you might call.
Hi Sandra, it's a lovely piece of heaven on earth and totally remote. His nearest neighbors are a couple of miles away and the farm backs onto part of the national forest.
Hi Diane, that's a great way to sell his land. It's illegal in VA or more people would do it.

Posted - Feb 25 2009 : 8:00:23 PM Okay and thanks Sandra K, just didn't want to make a rude mistake. The farm is 128 acres in Randolph County and is on the mountain north of the mountain where Snowshoe Resort is located. http://www.firsttracts.com/property-09165-single_family_homes-155-12-12.html has photos, the farm is fenced with feed plots, water troughs, pasture, mountains and a pond due to be put in this year. There are cattle on the farm, large herds of non-domestic deer along with bear, turkey and other wildlife. The nearest post office is Valley Head and it's all about 19 miles from the bottom of Snowshoe. If anyone is interested and wants my brother, Steve's, phone number, PM me please and thanks. He has a clause where he if he sells the property directly, he doesn't pay the sales commission and that savings is passed to the buyer. Love your name, it's mine as well -smile- with same middle initial.
