Hello Ladies, My husband and I have had a change in plans. We decided not to buy a houseboat. Instead we have decided to buy a small piece of land near Rome Ga. It is 10 acres and has a natural spring running through it. Also it has fencing for horses if we want.. We are going to start off small and grow mushrooms in a small horse tack shed and have earth worms to make worm tea. In about 2 years we hope to have a barn, greenhouse and about 25 chickens with a nice coop.....If anyone has any suggestions that has experience in these things I have mention...dont hesitate to let me know.
Thanks
Deborah

I will be changing my city again when we move to our houseboat

I had friends that lived off Alabama Hwy. in Rome. (They just moved back to FL last year!) There are so many lovely farms up there! Can't wait to see pics. Don't worry, you'll catch on to Photobucket!!
I'm trying to convince my hubby to let me make a vermiculture bun from old tires. Maybe if I get a "real" one, I will be met with less resistance. lol
Good luck with yoru new farm.

Well Hello Ladies...It has been a very trying time to move but we are here...I am very excited and have a lot of work ahead of me. we are starting small like i said...i just ordered a worm composting bin and it should arrive in about a week. And I will have to wait to see if we have more cold weather, before starting the garden. This Ga weather is crazy...We had snow flurries today and it is supposed to be 28 tonight. But I am very excited to start my new life with my husband and our farm. Can someone help me in putting pics on so I can show a little of the house on the outside? Also I saved a small puppy that someone droped off at the truck stop at the exit we get off of to come to the farm..I just couldnt leave him there. He is a very sweet boy and is gaining weight weekly...I will send pics of hime too....with help that is..lol
thanks

A natural spring! How I envy you. I had one many years ago in a piece of land I bought but when I divorced my ex he made me sell it to give him half of the money. Thing is he never put a penny into buying it (or anything else including feeding our children) but laws being what they are there was nothing I could do but I still dream of having a spring. You are so lucky. I will be experimenting with mushrooms this year. I ordered what I need from Fungi Perfecti (fungi.com). I will be trying to grow them outdoors (for now for my own use). I live in Minnesota but my yard has many types (not that I ever tried eating them just in case) so I think they will do ok. I also have worms but those I grow indoor in my basement to recycle my vegetable peels and waste. They don't generate any bad odor, on the contrary, it smell like healthy soil just when it starts to rain.

Update, Just wanted to let you ladies know that we are moving to the farm in Plainville Ga. On the weekend of Feb 8th....We are so excited. But I have never heated with propane...We were wanting to have solar power so I think we will have to find out how to change it over. I am going to go to a class on how to grow mushrooms in Atlanta in April...and there are several classes with the Georgia Organics that are great for new hobby farmers...I will send pics as soon as we get moved in...
Have a great evening
Deborah

You make worm tea from the earthworms casings...so that is what my husband has found out...that is going to be his thing..I am going to be the one growing the mushrooms..simple..hehe. Hey Jeannie nice to meet you...I will check in now and then to let everyone know what is going on with our new place.

Thanks again ladies.

Sounds just wonderful! We love Rome. Such a lovely place to make your home. I'm so happy for you. Storey Country Wisdom has some of the best little booklets about raising chickens & building a coop. We just got ours and are really impressed with the valuable information they contain. You might want to check them out.

Now you simply must tell us about worm tea! Yikes!

Blessings, Lea
