Posted - Aug 15 2005 : 11:14:29 AM I think we are getting closer to agreeing it is time to get the acreage!
We decided to pare down the remodel job on the house so we could finish it sooner and sell it. We both realize we just don't belong in a neighborhood anymore (gee, I've always known that!). Our immediate neighbors are awesome, but a good number of the rest of them we could do without. We have a good sum for a down payment and there are two 65 acre plots with old farmhouses up for auction next weekend, I intend to go and at least see how these auctions go. If my back is better...
We're also just such perfectionists with our remodels that it is hard to sell them and leave them, and hard to keep ourselves from doing too much. We like making personal touches to the houses as we do them - hand carvings and hidden cubbyholes. The things we put that much heart into, or the ideas we have because we don't want to do it and leave it behind. We put our heart and soul into every home we've brought back to life. We agree it's time to have a home that will be our home for a long, long time - one that it's safe to put our hearts and souls into.
I want gardens I nurtured for 40 years or more, hidden spaces and small delights and many happy memories to surround my home. We both want peace and quiet (tired of neighbor's base on the car shaking our house!). We want a tree farm, a place to walk and let the dogs burn off all that energy. I want chickens and a cow. I want a huge herb garden, and a wildflower garden, all the things that to me say "home" even though I never grew up that way.
Maybe it's all around the corner. Maybe a year from now we'll be fixing up that old farmhouse we've always wanted.

Posted - Aug 15 2005 : 4:52:14 PM Thanks for the advice, Clare! I've attended a number of estate sales and property tax sales, but never a public auction for a house. Words from the wise :) |

Posted - Aug 15 2005 : 2:26:02 PM I'll join the cheering section! The auction sounds like a wonderful time...even if you aren't ready to buy yet, it will give you an idea of how the process works.
Too bad you & your DH are so far away...my 100-plus farmhouse is need of lots of remodeling expertise :)
