Now I have seen it all!!!! This morning in reading my newspaper supplement there was a picture of Madonna in a 50's looking dress and cardigan smiling oh so wistfully feeding her flock of chickens! It was on the pristine lawn of her English country estate. It was an exerpt from an article in Aug. Vogue magazine on Madonna's return to a more "demure and wholesome country lifestyle". I had to laugh when I saw this...At least she wasn't wearing a vintage 50's bib or half apron! This should reassure all of us that now it is really chic to be keeping chickens...UGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

When I was a faux finisher/decortive painter in LA I had the chance to work at Madonna's house and meet her (this is such a common thing for this line of work in LA). And she is a very nice and very disconnected person. Her children seemed really happy but this is not the life I would want to live, the amount of security you have to go through to get in and out of her house in LA was horrible. If I were her I too would run away to the english country side. She is very, very much a business women and she will continue to change with the times (you don't have to meet her to see that) but it just goes to show that we farmgirls are becoming trendy. I think I read in MJ's book that farm vacations are the new popular vacation thing to do. The thing that I hope this trend does is cause more people to go towards an organic life style, that would a good trend for all of the world.

Blessed Be

Kim, that is just what my DH said! He said the white dress was the draw...granted he is not a Madonna fan. He is pretty conservative and 50 years old, but the male perspective is interesting. DH is kind of the opposite of me actually. He said and I quote, " Maybe Madonna is finally cleaning up her act..." Hmmmm. I do tend to think motherhood and a level of contentment found through spirituality and looking into oneself can change a person. Also Madonna is in her late 40's now, and mortality can mellow one;s outlook on life! It sure has mine!

One last comment on this from a bunch of guys I work with.they actually brought up the article about madonna and i shared with them some of our thoughts. my boss replied, "there is only one word you need to know to understand the whole article...MARKETING!"
so there you have it...a man's perspective! i have to admit to loving it when they can sum it all up it in one word, saves me the emotional drain. on the other hand, can get boring..........that's why we have girlfriends!!!

Clare, I totally agree with you about Madonna. We as women are here to support all women. Everyone has made mistakes of judgment in their lives. Who are we to cast the first stone? We all agree to disagree. I don't agree with a lot of things people have done, but Madonna's seems to be more Spiritual, Loving, Thoughtful, Caring, and Grounded. Children and age does make us see life in a new light.

OH MY! I just read all of this "to do" over Madonna and since I'm new to this I have one word to say...BRAVO!!! to each and everyone of you for responding from the place in your heart, where you are NOW, as YOU! What fun to read and see how images can move us and shake us initially and then to read how our perspective can change and soften by anothers perspective... or NOT. Drives home another point about us all...we are each an "original individual", even when grouped under one big heading of "farmgirl" and how we express our original self, no matter how different, it is just that....DIFFERENT...not good or bad. So I'm loving the mirrors other people (farmgirls and Madonna) provide for me to see myself and I'm thankful for the opportunities to extented to others that which i want for myself...ACCEPTANCE.

You are ALL...wonder-FULL and warm in my heart!

I thought of another use for the cones. Wouldn't they be cute hung on the posts of a picket fence and filled with fresh bouquets of wildflowers?

Just finally got to read this post and boy did that photoshoot get you all worked up! I woould like to think that as people we are in a constant state of change, fine tuning and reworking to some degree. In another post about magazines we were all poking fun at the concept of raking in cashmere, shovelling the horse stalls in pearls. Here is another piece of propaganda meant to show us how inadequately we are doing it. I don't blame Madonna, it's just part of her evolution too. And as Susan said, I'm sure if presented with the opportunity we would find some common ground (most likely kids!)Hey! She's living inside a dream come true and we all know that they aren't always what we thought they would be. After all, she may live at the manor ; but to the manor born she was not. That must create an enormous sense of insecurity, and possibly self doubt.

And to end on a lighter note--Cecelia you had me really laughing with the mental image! I am going to take the high road and hope she has recycled those cone bras into lightning rods for the barn!

with a happy heart

Maybe those photo's could be used to increase awareness for "real" farm issues? At the very least it speaks volumes just by showing the world that even "material girls" get tired of the glitz and glammer of this very material world and long to go back to a simplier way of life! Those of us who are living close to the land are richer than Madonna will ever be because it comes from the heart.

To quote from LJR- "Farmgirl is a condition of the heart," not what you're wearing when you feed your chickens,
I think says it all!

Personally, I have always admired Madonna's ability to reinvent herself and remain "relevant" as a pop culture icon. Consider all of the pop stars that were pop stars at the same time that Madonna came on the scene. Probably most of them are long forgotten. As for her new life, I have no reason to doubt that she is sincere and really, what difference does it make in my life if she is or isn't?

And, p.s., if Vogue magazine was sending a photographer over to "document" me feeding my chickens, you'd better believe I'd look like a million bucks standing amongst my flock. "Farmgirl is a condition of the heart," not what you're wearing when you feed your chickens,

Not defending Madonna here but I sure hope I don't have to carry all my baggage from my youth for the rest of my life! I am going to be one tired old woman!!! It was indeed a publicity shoot. Of course. But I love chickens so yeah I did a double take. Having children changes people. So does having excess wealth. I always said I didnt want to be rich, it might change me. People say it wont but how do we know? But motherhood should and often does. We all have our place on this planet...even rich ol' Madonna. And yeah, her estate is beautiful from what I can see...and no I wouldnt wear chiffon under any circumstances, but I don't hate her for who she is either. We are both moms with a history...granted, mine is pretty boring, but I would just bet she and I could find something to talk about.

Sorry girls!! I dont know who madonna is trying to fool this time!!Photoshoots ,Image PUBLICITY,Fluff! If any one saw the SEX book a few years back you might just get a real perspective on this whole" no really I am wholesome" image she is trying to convince us of now that she is a mom.Going to the opposite extreme with the genteel
ladys manor lifestyle....I havent ever taken her seriously and doubt that I ever will.I admire the celebrities that use their status to
change the world in a positive global way. Real issues that matter.
Famine, poverty stricken 3rd world countries..world peace..environmental issues,Farm-aid.......I dont have the time nor the inclination to
care about who she is trying to portray. She has a need to be constantly out there in the spotlight. I have a need to connect with
farmgirls who have chicken crap on their boots, messed up hair and dirt under their fingernails!! Thats what matters!!!
Real Farmgirls don't feed chickens in Chiffon.....Darling!!!!

Hi girls, I am not now or ever was a Madonna fan but if feeding her chicks in a dress makes her FEEL like a farmgirl, so be it. Maybe she read MJ's book and wants to jump on the bandwagon. All she needs is a little help from her "farm friends". Michele

Honestly, the whole *look* she had going was almost certainly entirely the work of the photo designers from the magazine. I couldn't get the pictures to go, for some reason, but from what you all have said, she looks exactly like I would if I had her kind of money. :D I LOVE the polished 1940's look! Granted, it wouldn't go over so well in the chicken coop, but still...I bet it makes for some lovely pictures!
MeadowLark Posted - Jul 28 2005 : 2:48:58 PM
Madonna does look spectacular in the white dress, and her new home is beautiful! There is a defenite farmgirl vibe happening, a return to hearth and home and meaningful living. When I brought up the topic I wasn't trying to "diss" Madonna in any way...I was however shocked to see her in the company of a lovely flock of chickens looking so wholesome and happy and not edgy and proving some kind of point. It is refreshing to see this from celebrities, even if its hype of some kind.

I bought the mag to read while I am on hiatus in Kansas. I have not read the article yet. I bought it for the whole concept of the "age" issue. Very 40's country estates look. Hopefully the kids will benefit. Cute chickens though!!

I saw the photos .....well done as always, as much as I hate to admit it. Madonna likes to play dress up and seems to convince herself for awhile that she really is all those different characters. But she's just a character in general. A very rich and successful character!

This new enactment of hers is proof positive that there really is a Farmgirl vibe going on! Even Madonna is wanting to jump on!

Heckfire, let's send her a Bakeover kit!

Just when I thought I'd seen everything! Love the costume - made me think of Donna Reed and Harriet Nelson keeping house in heels and pearls. I accept that anyone can change, but when it's someone like Madonna all I thought was that she's trying for a new image, not a real makeover. But Clare is right, we should be accepting of others. I really can't see feeding the chickens dressed that way, but then again, maybe they do it that way in England. Let's just hope that she has put away those metal bras, and doesn't go out during a thunderstorm wearing them to get the chickens and sheep put away in the barn.!

Perhaps Clare's link on accepting ourselves could be kept in mind when we think about accepting others also.

I have to admit, her new English country estate is GORGEOUS and the grounds...wow! If I had all the money in the world I think I would love an English country estate...in Wisconsin! .
