Each day we are a little closer to putting our home on the market. I have been mucking out 12 years worth of junk in the attic and it is slow and hot work, but I am making headway on it. Every box I throw out or donate to charity makes me feel a little closer to our homestead.

Here is where I need help.

We will move just about anywhere where we can grow a garden, have chickens and raise our daughters. We would love to have about 20 acres....some woods are ok, hopefully with a source of water on the property. We are really hoping to keep it under 150 thousand too. So if any of ya'll farmgirls hear of a place........please let me know.

Thanks and I really love ya'll,
Georgann

On the drive from Laramie to Saratoga today (Wyoming), I saw a sign advertising 40 acre homesteads for sale. The land looked like it was right alongside a mini mountain with trees, pasture, and water. It was so beautiful! That area is high plains, so the winters can get a bit chilly and you can get lots of snow, but the summers usually stay a bit more mild. They can get warm and you can garden though. It is close enought to the Laramie/Cheyenne/Ft. Collins/ Denver area to be nice, but far enough away to have the small town feel. The closest town was Centenial which has a wonderful feel to it. I wanted to stop when I saw a cute house that said "For Rent" Oh my word! That little house had the best view and right in town too!

Cynthia,
I'll talk to my husband about it, but we really need a house of some kind on the property. We are looking into modular if we find a nice piece of land, but a barn already there and those old trees and access to a river....mmmm sounds good. I see it is above Colorado and Texas....what is the summer heat like? Humid? Dry? Really hot?

I am craving the cooler climates as I age...could be just my hot flashing, but I don't know. I have an aunt in Nebraska...near the capital city. I think I have cousins there too. My son is in Austin TX.

Thank you so much, I would love to see photos if you get the chance to send them!!

My family is selling off 40 acres from our ranch. It is located in southwest Nebraska near a town called Big Springs. It's very beautiful serene country. We have 100 year old trees on the place and it's not far from the South Platte River. It does have a barn, but no house. I don't know what your looking for and it's more than 20 acres, but I can email you pictures if you'd like.

The Pacific Northwest is really great. You can get just about any climate you want, from Northern Pacific Rainforest to desert to the rolling hills of the Palouse! I know how hard it is to be away from family... so I guess I will understand if you decide to stay back east

Hey, western NY is still in the running according to those criteria! Summers are pleasant and the big snow is up north in the Watertown/Oswego area. And you can buy a whole lot of house and land up here for 150K. I'll have to start checking the real estate ads.

Well, Georgann, it's been in the mid 90's this past week here in Kentucky! :( And we are in a major drought. But the winters do NOT involve snow measured in feet...generally just inches. And darn it, too, because the 17 acre property right next to me just sold! You might want to check online land/real estate places in KY(Kentucky Land Co., Barr real estate and auction and Butler real estate). You could probably find what you describe in that price range in KY. Just keep moving forward. You'll get there!

Aunt George-

I suggest going to www.findyourspot.com you take a survey that asks you all sorts of things about what you are looking for and then it finds the best towns/areas for you to live. Then once the search results are in you can click on each result and it gives you all sorts of information about that location. Things like cultural attractions, weather, crime rates. All the things that you might need to know before moving to an area.

I hope that helps!

E,
I might just have to call your husband more toward mid to late summer. I'll keep his phone number handy. We would want to try to keep it to the Eastern side of Ohio. My brother is moving to DC next month and we would like to be within a decent driving distance for visits....although, if the place is right we might even go all the way to Idaho or Wyoming!

I finished mucking out the attic and at least it is presentable for a realestate showing now. It looks as huge as it really is up there. I just need to repack all of the maybes left out.

Today, I weeded through a huge wall of books and made three runs of paperback books to the Book Exchange and ended up with a $60 credit there. I also picked up some books in exchange that I know I will be using: Everything about roses, everything about tomatoes, a book with gardening charts: charts like, when to plant what if your freeze date is such and such and a macrame book for my daughter.

The rest of those books went to the Goodwill.

This next week, I'll be hauling all of the hardback books to the Exchange and then the remainder to the thrift store. I saw a wonderful Wild Flower book, but I would have to pay for half of it with cash, and since it is no buy summer, I really hesitated. I'll have to get the book some other way.

I will only be using the store credits for books that I know I can use on the farm...essentials only. My mantra is: Whatever is left, I have to pack and then carry. ARGH....so I really want to bare bones this move!!!!!

Thanks for all of the suggestions and I am still looking and will look in all of the areas ya'll have mentioned. I was wondering if there is a part of the country that has summers tops at around mid 80's without 10 feet of snow? LOL......I really don't need air conditioning until it hits mid 90's.

It is French Carrot Soup and crusty bread for dinner tonight!!

Later,
G
