Hi everyone. My husband and I are considering building or renovating an older home into an eco-friendly home in the central ohio area. I've begun researching some different approaches and materials, such as earth-bag, strawbale and SIP's. We would like to do most of the construction ourselves and we have 14 -26 months to live somewhere else while we work on it. I was wondering if any of you have done, or researched anything similar. I'd love some advice or resources or any help I could get at this early stage of research! Thank ladies!

There is a new show on HGTV called Red Hot & Green. It is nothing but renovating, decorating, etc green. I saw the first one and it was amazing what is available.

I dream of building a strawbale home too, with passive solar design. In my County, they're not even legal to build yet, but by the time they are, maybe I'll be ready to chase my dream!

Thank you for the info. I've checked those websites out and it looks like there is tons of info on them. In fact a found a strawbale registr and on it was listed a straw bale home made by the university in my small town of Granville. I've contacted them and hope to stop by soon. This is exciting but overwhelming with the amount of info out there. I'm not sure where to start! I'll post updates as I go along this process. Bridgette, you can come visit if we do straw bale and hopefully you'll get to build your own someday soon! Thanks again, ladies, and if you stumble across anything else helpful, keep it coming.

I don't know much about this type of contruction, but could you post about what you are learning on here? I am sure there are lots of ladies that would love to learn along with you!

When we were building our cabin in MT we found Countryside magazine to be a great resource. Also, Mother Earth News put out an issue that was solely devoted to Earth friendly building. You can still order it.
