Hello farmgirls, If everyone of you would read the article Meadowlark posted on a farm of my own about the rising cost of farms, it IS happening everywhere, then wrote a letter to your reps,congressmen etc. EVERY week, the same letter if need be until SOMEONE got back to you, it's a start. If we are to have any hope of saving farms in ALL our towns, we need to start showing our government that we exist. All of our states have "ghost farms" that developers are buying up for more of those ugly cookie cutter homes and shopping centers we dont need anymore. I know it isnt much yet but a friend told me start small, put it in writing, everyday if need be, but just start. OTHER groups get heard when they have large numbers of people, WE ARE NO DIFFERENT. I just joined the website, so please bear with me. I have a garden, but not a farm. I would love to someday own a farm, but someday seems so far away. My husband is handicap and tires very easy, so what yardwork I have is left up to me to do. The reason I wanted to share with you today is that there is an Organic Consumer Association online at http://organicconsumers.org. I agree that the American farmers are loosing big time and they need to speak out and be organized. Let me know if any of you have heard about this website. Keep up the good work and the good fight! We will overcome this administration! |

Robin, you are so right! I try to NOT go to the grocery store for anything if I can help it. I buy my brown eggs from a local woman w/ free range chickens down the road from me. I buy all my fruit & veggies from various local growers. Yesterday I looked on the internet for local organic beef & chicken, we dont eat alot of it but we want organic or at least "natural" without chemicals. We must support our local farmers. Michele

I know I'm preaching to the choir but I never tire of saying this. We also need to support the small farmers. Everything you buy from the grower puts your dollars in the farmer's hands instead of the middleman's.
Talk to people. Anyone who will listen. Wherever you are. My daughter needed tomatillos for salsa verde. We don't grow them so we bought them at the grocery. We'll grow them next year - the salsa verde is awesome. We looked at the old, waxed, soft, over-grown cucumbers. Knowing the woman beside us would hear what I was saying, I said, "These are horrible. The cucumbers are farmers market today were sooooooo much nicer." The woman was surprised. She didn't know about the market. She'd missed it by an hour.
When you're having coffee with a friend you can slip in "do you know what I learned about pork this week?"
"Have you read Mary Jane's new book? You should hear what she has to say about ________."
Keep talking! We can educate a lot of people on the importance of farming with just a few words.

Send a copy of the letter you are writing to your congressmen to your local newspaper and indicate whether or not you are getting a response.....
And I agree, we have to be more active or there won't be any land or family farms left for our children and grandchildren's future...
My paternal grandmother died of breast cancer in the 1930's when my dad was just 16 so I never knew her, but I look like her and she wrote some things and I am a writer so I feel a special bond with her....and I can just SEE her here on this farm getting the buggy ready and hitching up the horses to go to town like they said she used to do....never waiting around on a man to do anything....for her legacy and for the legacy of so many before us, and for those coming behind us, we must protect the land and our rights to be small farmers!
You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt! |
