I'm in the throes of a heated auction bidding war which ends today at six--but I thought I'd check with the farmgirls who have dealt with an antique object 1855 with chippy paint and what they would recommend for a sealant-clear and non-yellowing so that it contains the chippiness and yet preserves the integrity of the hand painted design on this LOVELY Austrian Wedding Chest dated 1855.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you girls!!

Melody

Dawn...I won't be putting a sealant on it. My gut tells me to keep it lightly dusted, but let her be.

And, you are right about affecting the value of it if any refinishing or sprucing up is done to an antique.

At that same auction my husband won an antique Comb Back Windsor chair with original black paint and the area where it has worn down to the wood is beautiful-he is adamant about not doing anything to it-no polish etc.

So, happy I didn't go the route of a sealant---I am going to treasure this till my end of days and it will be a beautiful heirloom piece for my daughter or son.

Melody, I don't know if this will help. But I use this sealant Minwax polyurethane clear satin for my completed Icons that I paint. Good luck. What a treasure you were able to get and the history you learned from it.

Melody, that is so neat you got to meet him and learn some history behind the chest. That makes it that much more special.

Is it possible for you to have an antique dealer in your area advise you on whether or not to do anything to the chest? Many times on PBS's "Antique Roadshow" they say how the value of something has dropped considerably due to the owner having spruced it up.

The chest looks beautiful, enjoy your win! Good luck finding the answers you need.

Picked her up this afternoon and discovered that the estate owner was present helping the auctioneer at his house (a gorgeous turn of the century huge HISTORIC house facing the river) He graciously found me and I asked some questions about the chest. He said his wife-now deceased-was an avid and diligent antique'er and while they were stationed in Germany-not so very far from Ramstein where my father and my family lived for four years-funny huh? Well, she bought it while they were there and then had all her treasures shipped back to the states when he was transferred state-side. The Wedding chest has a very warm, rich and deep red background and really not as chippy as I thought it would be. The pictures did not do it justice-Oh, did I mention this was an online auction? I'm debating now whether I should just leave it alone as far as a matte sealant-not sure-will have to really think about it.

Oh, what that chest has been thru---the history and the travel.

Thanks ladies for all the help.

Re-thinking this... are there any cabinetry shops in your local area? that make custom cabinets? maybe they would have a suggestion as to what to use.
