Posted a few pictures, my Grand parents first grocery list from 1914, you will have to click on it to see it real good. My other redwork quilt from the 1930's, and a couple of other pictures. It seems all my older quilts are from the 1930's. I have a few newer ones, probably from the 1980s. Must have been a very popular pastime in the 30's.

Thanks for all the comments, yes Amie I have to leave lots and lots of things I want at the thrift store, Room is running out, and believe it or not I can't stand clutter. evrything has to have a home.
I forgot to mention, there are 16 things on the grocery list and the total bill is 1.89, isn't that funny?

Nancy, what kind of magical house do you have? You're always bringing out some new treasure from the past, and you score new stuff every week at the thrift store. And yet your house always looks neat as a pin in your pictures. Do your closets expand infinitely? |

What a fun heirloom that grocery list is! I love all the wonderful quilts too. I have that same Carolyn Westbrook book. I love it. The cover is rather misleading, as it looks very "shabby chic" but overall she has a lot more color than that and has a real talent for blending eclectics. Thanks for sharing your treasures with us!

Oh I LOVED that first shopping list!! That was so neat! I love things like that! Can't wait til I get settled in and get some of my family's herloms together and up!! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Hi Nancy,
How neat that you have that list. I have a copy of my G-grandpas farm diary after he moved to USA from Hungry. It was very interesting to read. There are some price lists in there for grain, amnimals etc. You are giving me an idea to frame it. Mind if I borrow your idea? Loved your Quilt. I have recently taken a likeing to redwork so it is very interesting to see the quilt. I love to see your pics. Some day I will have to figure out how to post my own. I have some old quilts my MIL made. They are signed in embriodery in her maiden name and dated 1939 and 1941. They are applique. I think you would like them.
Tomorrow is my day off. You have inspired me to go yard sale and thrift store. I'll let ya'll know if I find anything.

Loved it all, Nancy Jo. I do like redwork. I am doing a horse scene in different colors I may just change it and do all red, hmmmm.
What a wonderful thing to save the first shopping list. Why didn't I think of that.?! I do remember (it seems like a loong time ago) I would go shopping, once a week, with my girlfriend and we would have $25 and we would see who could buy the most stuff. I remember hamburger would be on sale for 4lb. for a dollar. Wow, times have changed. MB

JEANIE, Thanks for your imput on the dates all seeming to be about the same on the making of the quilts. Wish I could see yours.
Yes girls that shopping list is a winner. I had it framed so I could hang it in my kitchen. Can't believe she had saved it because she saved almost nothing, even gave up her wedding ring to the red cross during world war two.

Quilting becomes popular when times are rough. The 1930's was depression time. Blankets were a luxury. Redworks are rare! Yours is beautiful.
In the 70's, I think the need to learn how to survive came forward again. So everyone began to learn about quilts, candlemaking, basket weaving, etc.
All of my old quilts are from these two time periods, also. Equally as beautiful.
