Ladies, I'm starting a writing project that I need some help with. I'm compiling a list of names of people who meet all of the following criteria. Please list anyone you can think of -- I really appreciate your help and may have some good news to share in a month or so because of this.
Criteria:

1. famous, alive now
2. was considered successful/famous
3. failed or had a "downfall", while in the public eye
4. the failure or downfall is due to their own actions, not something like an illness or something they had no control over
5. has bounced back from that "downfall"

One example I can think of is Vanessa Willaims. She was Miss America or Miss USA (can never keep track of those), found to have posed nude and was forced to relinquish her crown, but now she has a fairly successful career as an actress (singer, too?). Another is David Caruso. Was really "hot" on some show, left in a huff to be a huge movie star (even said in interviews that TV wasn't big enough for him or something to that effect), flopped in movies, returned to TV and is now the star of a hit show.

Ladies, I really appreciate it!

Drew Barrymore is a good one! She's amazing.

I was thinking about Drew Barrymore, she was still a kid really. But she really cleaned herself up and look at her now! Winona Ryder had that shoplifting incident, but then again, not sure what she has doen since...

One of them I actually had an interest in reading more from. And he had the least amount to say. The other three, I kept going thinking there may be some "...light-shining-through-the-clouds-revelations..." before the end. As though maybe they would have learned something about themselves? Unfortunately, and true to the characters they've always displayed publicly, there weren't any epiphanies. They are three hedonistic, pathetic, skirt chasing drug addicts who delusionally believe they've had some sort of impact on the world of music and the world at large.

And interestingly: how many "famous" people believe that of themselves in general? I believe that my daughter who died when she was 15 days old but had 160 people attend a gathering for us to thank them had more of a true impact than most "famous" people.

Sorry for the hijack... ~ K

yep, Kaylin, Pete Rose--and he's from my town! Used to tease me when I was a littl gal, hanging around the racetrack--my father was a racing official, and he would sit up in the press box with us....betting.

I'm SO sorry that you read that bio. How ever did you make it through?

Let's see...
Betty Ford. An honest alcoholic. Don't find too many of those, created a clinic for treatment.

Oprah. She slammed the cattle/beef industry in Texas and those dorks came after her. Remember the televised trials? She obviously escaped unscathed.

Paul McCartney--Wings era drug possession, marrying Heather Mills .

Bill Cosby. How many women now have come out stating that he sexually harrassed or assaulted them. He's still a well respected comedian, and I don't think Jello made any quick decisions to boot him. I don't know if any of the allegations are true--they sure seem to get pushed under the rug rather quickly after out of court settlements.

More good ones, Jonni! I was thinking of Vince Neal, because he killed someone (I just read the Motley Crue book at DHs recommendation - *BIG* mistake!) But he doesn't seem to have any remorse for it - he just continues to blame the alcohol...while he keeps drinking. Like you, he doesn't even rate in my book.

Here were some others that popped up last night while we were watching the Imus footage on DHs wi-fi connection. (We don't have TV and I only have dialup, but DH has a laptop.)

~ Jimmy Swaggart (extramarital relationships)
~ Halle Barry (driving drunk)
~ Winona Ryder (retail theft)
~ Matthew Perry (drug abuse - multiple)
~ Darryl Strawberry (drug abuse - multiple)
~ Pete Rose (sports gambling pariah)

This may just be in our little world, but Jeff Tweedy of the band, Wilco. He had a prescription drug addiction that just about cost him his family. He checked into rehab, and it ran across CNN's ticker at the bottom of the screen....he was even surprised at that! He's clean, and makes the best music I know.

Jerry Springer--you guys know him as that terrible talk show, but in Cincy, we know him as the former mayor and news anchor. He solicited a prostitute and that was the end of that....now he's a shoo in on dancing with the stars!

My husband says, "Vince Neal of Motley Crue"....while he really doesn't rate in my world, he killed another guy, a member of another band while driving drunk to get drugs during the height of their fame. He still went on tour, and they just played a pretty big concert venue reunion tour either this summer or last.

I'm sure I'll have some more...

Britney Spears....oh...she's still trying to work her way back up! lol

Ooohh - all good "notorious" names. What about Madonna? She had that book "Sex" in the early 90s that came in the "Mylar Cover". Then she did "Evita" and all was forgiven! Granted, it was probably all just for publicity anyway. It just wasn't a path that I was taught that "...Good Girls..." take. ~ K

How about Danny Bonaducci (sp) of the 'Partridge Family'? I think he got in a lot of trouble for a while (drugs and drinking) and now he's on a local radio station in my area...or was anyway. Sometimes you see him on cable.

How about the most notorious (in my mind), O.J. Simpson. While he's not famous, per se, anymore, he still seems to be able to get people to listen to his crap. It wasn't more than a few months ago, that he was going to write a "what if I killed her" book, and someone was actually going to pay for the rights!

Unbelievable.

Ladies, great answers so far -- keep them coming!

I've thought about this topic alot the last year or so, and it is amazing how the public reacts to the "downfalls". Anyway, any more names???

What about Mel Gibson? He did a good thing with "The Passion." Then he really stepped in it with his DUI and then the seemingly racist comment. He does seem to bouce back and is certainly a talent...no doubt about that!

yay for Willie. He does a lot for our farm people and others without recognition. Paid back the gov't. what they said he owed. And still puts on one hell of a show for us. I have photos of him with me and my daughter in the late 70's; been a fan since very early '70.
Some good names have been posted, everyone has their thinking caps on today.

I think Martha Stewart fits the criteria. That whole thing could have been drawn out, but she chose to serve her sentence as soon as possible and then get on with her life and try to keep everything afloat in her business....very successfully, too. Let me think, who else...? The ones already mentioned are good. It's hard to come up with someone, but I thought, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones?? Not a great example, but the fact that he's still alive and doing concerts is amazing (that whole group,in fact. Who would have thought that in their 60's they'd still be going strong?). That goes for a lot of the old rock n' rollers, too.

Actor Hugh Grant comes to mind. Everyone pretty much thought his career was over when he was caught in a compromising situation with a companion-for-hire. Of course, the best thing he did was own up to it.

I'm also thinking about Michael Richards (a.k.a. Seinfeld's "Kramer") and Mel Gibson. They had public outbursts regarding race and religion...more going toward their "core values." I still heard jokes about both of their outbursts on the radio (don't have TV service, so I don't know about that) even though their respective events happened months ago and both men apologized for their wrongs. But it seemed at the time, the Hugh Grant thing died down fairly quickly.

So I guess it's also got me wondering: are some "wrongs" more forgiveable than others (such as physical indiscretions, posing for photos, breaking financial laws) while others are less forgiveable (such as being a bigot, driving drunk, being arrogant?)

(The arrogant remark made me think of Leona Helmsley - "The Queen of Mean" - remember her from back in the 80s when she got caught for tax evasion?)

How about Mike Tyson? Had the world in his hands - quite literally - but got in trouble when he let his aggressions take control. We saw it in the ring when he bit the ear off of one of his opponents. We heard about it with multiple women who claimed to be the vicim of sexual assaults. The first time, the public didn't believe it. The second time, the public didn't want to believe it. The third time, the public had no choice except to believe it.

And how about Ted Kennedy - Chappaquiddick ring any bells? The name of Mary Jane Kopechne has all but been forgotten except in the minds of a few. Most people in my generation never even knew her name. And seeing as Senator Ted himself never even apologized, it makes one wonder: did *he* ever even know it himself?

Gotta go get the 1st grader... ~ K

Former President Jimmy Carter.

Many thought his presidency was a dismal failure...but look what he has done with Habitat for Humanity.
