Posted - Jan 03 2022 : 07:44:10 AM My mother-in-law bought my husband and myself $100 gift cards each from Macy's in Southern CA. She paid $200 in cash for them however the employee who took her money didn't put the receipt in the bag like she told my mother-in-law. Turns out the employee pocketed the cash and we have two gift cards that were never activated.
Make sure you always have a receipt, especially when paying cash. My sister-in-law is reporting this to the Macy's store & police, but without a receipt nothing else can be done.
It really angers me how thieves target the elderly, my mother-in-law is nearly 90 and is very upset about this. She began worrying after she mailed the cards to us when she couldn't find their receipt.

Posted - Jan 05 2022 : 1:55:46 PM Thanks, I feel bad for my MIL. She is on a very fixed income and even though we told her we didn't need anything she still went out of her way to buy us the gift cards. She needs to use a walker so going to a big store like Macy's is quite difficult for her and then to have her $ stolen like this really infuriates us. Living so far away makes it even more difficult since our hands are tied & we don't want her to know that her money was stolen.
Sadly she used to have a cleaning service for her apartment & they stole her prescriptions & wallet plus a birthday gift she had for someone in her bedroom. She was concerned that a new crew had come to clean her apartment & went to check on the birthday gift that was on her dress when she discovered it was missing. That's when she realized they got into her purse and cleared out her medicine cabinet as well. This was about 3 years ago and my SIL who lives over an hour away from her took over cleaning her apartment on weekends. My SIL is a doctor and works full-time plus has her own family to take care of, but sadly she can't trust anyone to take care of her mom's apartment without worrying they will steal from her again.

Posted - Jan 04 2022 : 06:40:57 AM Without a receipt, nothing will be done on Macy's part. We are in IL and my mother-in-law is in CA, otherwise I would go to that store & their local police about it. We told our MIL that it was all straightened out with Macys to put her mind at ease. She was very worried after mailing the cards to us that they weren't properly activated when she discovered the receipt wasn't in the bag.
Sadly, we must always be alert about these things and never let our guard down.
