It is about that time of year to start haying. held off during this heat wave we are having. Get the haybine out tonight and go through it and grease it up. Nice to get started even better to get it done.

We don’t start haying until around the 4th of July, but with the severe drought pattern we are in We are not expecting a very good cutting. FSA did open up CRP, but that can not be hayed until after the 1st. Of August. By than any nutrient value will be gone. It is going to be a tough year for many ranchers this year, lots of hard decisions to be made.

A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

We wont start cutting until July 15th or so. We usually get one cut, so we wait for it to be good.

Well Michelle,, send you rain over here, tho' now it's a bit to late for us.. our hay did not do well due to the drought this year..
not worth bothering with cutting and baleing,,, DH is thinking about turning it under and maybe seeding with Alfalfa....
our neighbor's on both sides of us also are not bothering to cut and bale.
Oh well... just life in the country...

Glad you could fix the mower quickly Michele! Hopefully you can get the first haying done without any rain setbacks.

Got 25or so acres to cut today and it all will be down. Taking a chance that we don't get rain tongiht, but it does not look like it will. Had a minor repair on the mower conditioner, saying that correctly, and I was back in business.

I know you need rain, like we do here west of Chicago, but hopefully you can bale before you get downpour. Stay cool!

We do make some small squares, but round bale most all of our hay. We tried some over seeding last year, hoping it improves on the number of bales.

I think we are already on our second cutting of hay down here in north central Florida. Since our weather warms up so much sooner, we often can get a least three cuttings a year. The main grass source is Bahia grass which has low protein value but great for general forage with cows. My daughter, who raises dairy goats, usually gets some local peanut hay which has a much higher protein value and grows down here like a weed. Florida can't grow Timothy or Alfalfa so peanut hay is an affordable substitute for goats according to my daughter.

We made some clover baleage that was a cover crop for a grain farmer. We expected to get 150 - 175 bales. We ended up with 482!!!! I know what you mean about better to be done :) I hope everything goes smoothly for you! We have a round baler. What kind of bales do you make?
