So,,, after dropping our Ginger-pup off at the Vet's for her teeth cleaning,, hubby and I made a dash into the Wal-Mart store to p/u bird seed and a few other items (I normally do my shopping on line).
While in the store we noticed about 1 /3 of the customers were not wearing masks. When we asked the clerk who was doing the 'count' of customers coming and going.. he said Wal-mart Corp said not to enforce, or provide masks for customers entering...

Then we went to pay,, we walked up to the Check-out area, and saw that only 1 clerk-check out station was open (the cigarette isle) and had about 6-7 people in line.
so we went to the 'self check out' area... the machine was being problimatic and 2x we had to call the clerk over for help.. We asked why the 'clerk manned' check outs were all closed,, her response was, Wal-Mart is transistioning to an all 'self-check out' with only one clerk manned check-out for the cigerattes...
OMG!!! I can't even fathom the "Loss" they will incur from theft at those self check out stations....not to mention other issues that will arrive..
And here is the Kicker,, right there at the self check out was posted a large sign " Now Hiring, $17.52 per/hr"

I probably will not being going back there for a long time... I still think it is the stores responsibility to assist and service, the customers and that includes ringing up the items being purchased...

We have a Mennonite population in our community as well. The ones at the end of our road sell honey but I haven’t seen any other stands. I’ll have to ask them if they know of any others.

Went to one of our Walmarts yesterday. I hadn't been in quite awhile. Same thing there. Majority of checkouts is self checkout with 4 regular cashier lanes but only 2 were open. 2 employees were standing around talking while everyone was scanning. I don't understand their thinking. Save money by not paying cashiers for all checkouts but lose money by theft at the self checkout.

Oh Lisa,, we have a large Huetterite, (like the Mennonite, but they use elecgricity),,population here in N.E. Washington.. I miss the pre-pandemic years,, when they set up stands at the Farmers Markets and Craft Fairs,, and sold there home made breads, pies and garden veggis..

Our Walmarts in the rural markets here are clean, most wear masks, and due to where some of the other major chains are deciding to contribute money,(and/or pull certain products from shelves) is my preferred choice to shop. I also shop our local IGA, that has local meats and produce. And Amish markets, when they open.
We have some Walmarts closer to Cincinnati that are dirtier and cluttered, but luckily the ones in the rural areas are much more well maintained.
Grace, I never could understand how the self check out is monitored I can see how folks can just cram un-scanned items into the bag.

There has been a lot of speculation on what the "new normal" would turn out to be post pandemic. I think we're beginning to find out. Oh well, I guess we have two choices: we can try to adjust as best as we can while maintaining our own values, or we can get our blood pressure skyrocketing about things over which we may not have control. I think I'll print out blow ups of the Serenity prayer and put them up all over my house.

Judith,, our little local Library also has the self check-out station... I agree,, the lack of social interaction is becoming more the norm..
I enjoy chatting with staff, and clerks.(before the pandemic started)... now we are encouraged to order our books on-line,,, personally, I like to walk down the isles,, looking at 'ALL' the books,, and spotting one I would not have know about.... thumbing through the magazines and even spending time with my grand-kiddos at the library.

Grace -
I use the mail order pharmacy for prescriptions, but when a new one is needed for a specific illness or something then it is WalMart.

I am also not a fan of self checkout; every time I tried to use one it didn't work right. I wonder if stores are hastening their demise by user unfriendly devices like self checkouts. The more frustrated people get the more they will buy online. Walmart (and others) are going the way of the USPS --always raising prices and providing less customer service. Even the library where I worked for 19 years has gone to self checkout. I used to enjoy the interaction with our patrons, getting to know them and their likes and dislikes and being able to recommend books. Self checkout has done away with that, now everyone is a stranger.

My little guy and I had to run to our local Walmart on Monday and I was very surprised at the amount of people who didn't have masks on. But I hadn't heard about them going to only self checkout. I think that is a terrible idea. I personally hate self checkout. And hope store don't go that way.

Our local Walmart is only two years old so it isn't as grungy as the ones in neighboring towns. We only went there twice at the beginning of the pandemic and decided to shop elsewhere because of the people not wearing masks. I do order a few things from WalMart online that they have cheaper than elsewhere.

Linda,, isn't crappy about the RX oder preferred.. fortunatly, our med. Ins., doesn't limit us,, but they keep pushing the RX by mail..
Problem is, my hubby doesn't tolerate a lot of the different brands oh blood pressure meds, the Pharma company we use id "Lupin".. and because it is on the generic tier,, we can get it at our local drown the road Market/pharmacy....
I hate waling by the Pharm area in our local wal-mart,, crazy long lines and long waits.. and quite honestly, when I was pricing out the BP RX,, wal-mart was not the cheapest,, CostCo and our little YOKEs market were.

We had heard this several months ago. The WalMart closest to us is not kept up, and we were going to one in the next town, if we needed something from WalMart. We go to other shops and not WalMart if at all possible. Unfortunately, my insurance "preferred" pharmacy is WalMart, but otherwise we try not to shop there.
