I couldn't decide where I ought to post this, so here it is.
I ran across the website for the Small House Society the other day, and I just had to become a member. Here is the link:

http://www.resourcesforlife.com/groups/smallhousesociety/

They promote the idea of "smaller housing alternatives which can be more affordable and ecological". I'm all for this idea. And here's a website showing just how small - and how nice - a small house can really be:

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/

I'd want one of those if I didn't already have a little cabin of my own!

- Elizabeth Ann

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. - Thoreau

Absolutely! Take him up on it....how cool would that be? I would love a little '2nd' home! It would be your own private little cozy nest.

ROFL! Lorna! Take him up on it! How fun would that be! You could go "play" Little House in all weather and work on crafts!

I think one of those would be the cutest sewing/craft room in your backyard!

Hubby just came by and said, did you tell your farmer friends about the little house you showed me! We can get you one for the yard! lolol....he is a nut.

But now that I am thinking how awesome of an office / sewing / craft / outpost building / room would this be. He may be sorry he suggested it now.....

Ok, I had never heard to the Tumbleweed homes before I found this board a couple weeks ago but while we were in TN on vacation my father in law drove me around to all the log homes for sale so that I could see them and he could try to entice us into moving there. The problem is he is enticing the wrong person. I would go in a heartbeat, it is my husband who is the Balti-moron as I call him (my personal term for Baltimorean, those who just won't leave this congested over crowded city) although I did get him out to the county which is so very much better.

Anyhow, I had a point here. While we were out looking at the cabins and homes I saw two of these tumbleweed homes. They were so very adorable. I do need my space so I don't think I could go this small but I have to say I am impressed by those who can. They were adorable and my husband said, oh honey look at the little play cabin, we can get you one of those.

I said no dear, someone lives there! He didn't believe it. I said ok then tell me where is the big house? He scratched his head in awe. He does that alot.

Hugs girls!

adorable tumblweed houses .. i'd like to have one of those for a 'play house' for the grands!

i like 'small' .. but also need a little 'roaming' room .. i think our two cabins (both with a downstairs and an upstairs (no baths) are perfect! BUT .. mostly because we have a small 'lean to' built onto one of the cabins (which is my little space) .. and .. an enclosed back porch off the back of the 'upper cabin' .. for gardeny things and my ka-trillion books! i would need one of those little tumbleweeds just for my BOOKS! AND the 'addtion' (large kitchen . small bath . small laundry room and our bedroom (not real big) .. truly makes it more 'comfy'. i guess i'm just not ready for a one-room home.

(outside PORCHES are wonderful additions to any home too, i believe!)

Our cabin is 16 x 24, about the size of one of those two larger homes on the Tumbleweed site, and it doesn't seem a bit small. In fact the loft is really big - bigger than you need for a bed and a dresser. when we get electricity, I'll put my sewing machine up there until my dh finishes his shop with my sewing room upstairs. I definately could live in a tiny house. We lived in our RV for a couple of years though - you just adapt.

I am so glad you brought this topic up again. I remember when we talked about the small houses before. I have stated that I love going up to my small part of our farm and walk around....then I've pondered putting me a small cabin up there to enjoy and then you reposted these websites..... nothing is a coincidence !!!!!

I love small houses! One my favorite quotes that I really identify with is by Laura Ingalls Wilder when she notes, "I have always lived in little houses". I would love to have a Tumbleweed house, though we want kids, so maybe something slightly larger is in our cards. I have my dream house posted on my blog, and I think it falls into the small house catagory. Not too much, not too little!

I love the Tumbleweed houses. They are certainly small but cozy and efficient! My DH and I sold our 4500 sq ft beach house and moved across the water on a bay to a 2400 sq ft house. It is still way too big. I have a beautiful new house that is killing me in keeping it cleaned and maintained. New landscaping, sod & underground irrigation which is a major pain in the tail. It never works right and our water bill last month was almost 300.00. It seems like all we do is continually spend money on the house and yard. Lawn treatments because weeds invading the new sod. I am sick to death of all of it. I don't enjoy it anymore at this time of my life.Don't want to sound whiney because I am so thankful for everything we have.I am just saying that I will not keep this house. Within the next 3-5 yrs. we are planning to move into or build a much smaller house. Maybe a ranchhouse or cottage with room enough for a small garden and a small outdoor cook house. I never have time to do much else except clean, clean, clean. I want a home small and uncluttered so that I can do other things. Sew and garden. Sit on the porch and snap beans. I am 52 yrs old and have had it with too much space.

I was thinking about how our houses and apartments seem to keep getting bigger and bigger in our society and how we keep buying more things to fill up all that empty space, and then we say we need a bigger house because we have no more storage room! I know that Doug and I could live in a much smaller space if we needed to. We could get rid of a lot of things and live just fine- happy lives. It is weird how we convince ourselves that we need certain things- That said- I still think I would like a little more space for general living than a tumbleweed house- but I think they would be so much fun to have as a weekend cabin or a get-away. Kindof like having a tree house in the back yard that you sleep in during the summer :)

On "Good Morning America" this morning, they had a segment about a woman who built her own tumbleweed house in Olympia, Washington. Really adorable and cozy! It had a loft for her bed and the layout for the kitchen and bathroom was very ingenious. Imagine getting everything in that tiny space! Talk about the bare necessities.

It makes you think about what you really need, we live in a 12 x 60 mobile that is older and I like it. I also have a small yard where I can play in the dirt. It makes you rethink about space a lot. We do have a back porch and will put an enclosed front porch on. All because I found these great old windows from an old farm house and I want an enclosed porch to sit and enjoy my flower garden. Sitting with a cup of tea and in the winter to watch the snow fall.
Say Jay on the Oprah show about his tiny houses. Interesting.

Enjoying the moments.

I totally love them too. Someday when I have less kids at home I would love to downsize to a tiny house. OR have one on the property for a guest house sooner!! We are crowded in the house we have now..while 4 kids are still home..but someday..maybe..

It is nice seeing that site getting as many as 70,000 hits a day in this age of McMansions. I can understand if you honestly need a large house- But I don't understand it when two people build a huge house and then only live in part of it. *ugh*

I just had to bump up this topic...you can tell I've been reading alot in these wee hours..LOL

Anyway, I love the concept of the small houses and the Katrina house plans are close to my heart since all of my immediate family lost everything during Hurricane Katrina and that's what brought me to the mountains again

I love the tumbleweed houses. I also saved them to my favorites and I have tore articles out and saved them in my home file. Lowes has a similar home - they call it a katrina home and they are building them in New Orleans area in cooperation with a group. I told my daughter I just need to find some land and get a tumbleweed house for myself....

Elizabeth- I love the Tumbleweed houses! I actually have their site saved in my favorites. I think there was a thread about this quite a while ago. Glad you brought it back up. It is such a worthwhile thing to consider. Besides, who can resist anything tiny? :)
