Okay, come over and visit me at my blog to see what I got in the mail yesterday. I actually got three things yesterday in my mailbox that I adore. I wrote about the one I wasn't expecting. (I'll write about the other two later.) Have you ever gotten a surprise like that before? What did you think about it?

Hi Beckels,
No, I really don't think that means you are boring . . . quite the opposite . . . you are wanting to see something new and learn more of the American system of justice. This is a good thing. I think we should all look forward and participate in jury duty if we are able to.

I know I should never look forward to it - but i would loved to be called forward for a jury

I was called for jury duty once when the kids were little, but with my husband working 24 hour shifts as a paramedic and no one to watch the little ones, I had to be removed from the list. My husband did it a few years back for a guy who was basically taking advantage of a situation. He was a delivery man that jumped off the store dock and injured his back. They had a ramp and steps, but yet he chose to jump. The frustrating thing was that they actually ended up giving the man a settlement. It was much smaller than he asked for, but still . . . it was annoying.
I would actually enjoy jury duty now that the kids are older. I love to see our court systems in action, even if I don't always agree. We are truly blessed to even have a court system unlike many countries under a dictatorship.
If your life is free to do this, I would embrace it. It is a wonderful learning experience.

Yes, Mary Beth...she is and will admit to it...at least to me. Not too smart either...didn't even occur to her that having experienced the very same tragedy might influence her decision in the trial. She willingly tells me she's not as smart as me....not stupid, but just not the sharpest knife in the block. Ohh, that sounds really conceited of me, not meant to be but compared to her, I am much smarter. One time not too many years ago, she was ''involved'' online with a man and didn't want to give him her phone number, so was calling him collect. I asked if she didn't realize when he got the phone bill, the number that had made the collect call would show up...nope, she hadn't thought of it, thought she was being really smart. I could go on and on, but no need for it.

I have been called twice for district court since I started working at the police department. They wont use me because I handle prisoners. I would love to be on a jury. I definitely could be impartial too.
Hubby was jury foreman on a rape trial that I assisted with the juvenile victim here at the PD. For the life of me I cant understand why they put him on the jury. He was mayor of the town we live in and in charge of our police department and was married to the person dispatching on the day of the rape. Now granted I didnt talk to him about the rape at all. But still one would wonder what that defense attorney was thinking. My boss said they chose him because he is an outstanding person in the community and could keep everyone focused on the situation at hand. Which he said he had to do a lot of.
They gave the guy 65 yrs and he will be in his 90's when he gets out. The defense attorney didnt put on a defense and just rested after the procecution.
My son was a juror and they gave a state of Hawaii inmate 80yrs for attacking a prison guard. He was serving life on his previous charge anyway.

Never been called...boo hoo, nobody wants a nurse to sit on the jury! Wait, I'd better not say that too loud, I might get called....Big Brother is watching!! Have fun, maybe it'll be more than petty larceny.

I was called twice, but when I checked in the first time, they had cancelled it and the second time I had moved out of state. I would love to be on a jury!

I would think in questioning you, they will dismiss you. My experience is that the attorneys want gullible naive people on juries and if you appear to have any brains, they don't want you. Will be interesting to hear what happens. l was looking forward to serving; thought it would be interesting. Land sale fraud case in a small town in this county...well, they're all small towns in this county! My sister served on a jury in TN in a wrongful death malpractice suit; the man had died from the reaction to a med to lesson the effects of a heart attack....which is exactly what had happened to our stepdad a few years before. She should have excused herself in my opinion, but didn't say a word. The family sued the Dr. and Hospital and won. In my family, it was something no one could have known ahead of time and not anyone's fault. Strange, though, we didn't know the cause of death until getting the death certificate after the funeral and it said ''adverse reaction to ******, causing a massive stroke" Mother did get the accidental death benefit from a very inexpensive insurance policy they'd carried for years through the Los Angeles Times...something like $15 yr and it paid about $2k. I'd love to serve on a jury, if I ever get called again. In CA, about any excuse gets you dismissed, in TN, if you're called, you serve. No excuses. I think NV is somewhere in between and it makes for better juries. Just think of the OJ Simpson trial...wouldn't I have loved to be on that one!!

Never have had a surprise like that...my fear of serving on a jury would be to make the wrong decision...I would hate to live with that on my conscience not knowing... |

I was surprised in that same way two years ago about this time. Unfortunately, I didn't get to "partake" (not giving away the surprise here, either  ) due to my job.
I really wanted to partake, too!
