Hello Canada,

Do you need a passport this year if you are traveling from the US into Canada We want to go towards the Ontario area.

Thanks,

Tina

I just heard on the news that they are trying to have children not need a passport because of the high impact to families. My sister lives in BC and we are only 2 hrs from the border. MB

We live just 30 min from the border and go back and forth all the time, the rules as of today are -

If you are driving into the US you don't need a passport until 2008. A driver's license and a birth certificate work just fine. However, if you are flying then you do, even if you just touch down there to change planes/flights.

I assume it's the same rules going north. If you cross the border regularly I'd recommend getting the passport anyway - or at least starting the process. Canadians wanting passports now are finding huggge line-ups and months of waiting to get their passports because of this new rule, so the earlier you start the faster you'll get one

Thanks for your help and I'll check out the AAA. I would prefer to pick the dogs up before I buy and be able to examined them to make sure that they will fit with my bloodlines.

You could contact your nearest AAA and ask, but from my understanding:

If you're DRIVING, you DON'T need one this year. BUT, if you're FLYING you DO.

I only live about 100 miles from the border so it's a big topic here. Plus my daughter and her dad fly to Quebec every year (where he's from) so they are going to need passports this year. I think the deal at this time is you need a passport whenever you leave the US by plane, so you can return.

Hope this helps! Karin

We are coming to look over several Miniature Schauzers to add to our kennel. I checked with the US government and they said, "As early as January 1, 2998, everyone traveling between the US and Canada by land or sea may be required to present a valid passport". Since our whole family is going - that would be pretty expensive to get everyone a passport and I may decide to just ship the dog in.

From what I understand, traveling from or to the US/Canada...yes.
All travelers will need a passport as of April 1/2007.
You may want to research more, as this was just after Christmas (news)
Why are you coming to visit????? LOL
