Posted - Feb 25 2007 : 09:37:32 AM Well, some of you know that I am in the process of getting my farm set up so that we can move down there permanently. At the current time, there's no well, no septic, no power and no place to live, although we DO have the two barns up now.
We're hoping to either find a small travel trailer to camp out in, or we'll build a temp. apt. in one of the barns. To avoid having to plumb the barn, we'd prefer the camper and I've been finding some good deals on Craigslist. (Thanks to the farmgirl who steered me there!)
We plan to use the barns to store all our junk in, and also part of one of the barns for my knitting/sewing/toymaking shop. I've got tons of creative hobbies and I'll be getting about 600 square feet just for my workshop.
Anyhow, Hubby has been AWESOME lately at finding stores in Dallas that are going out of business and finding some incredible deals there.
His latest finds: JoAnn's (one of our stores is closing) he found some of those big yarn racks... He got me FOUR racks (with five double wide/two sided baskets each.) That gives me 40 bins to store stuff (20 dbl sided). They are interchangeable, so right now I have two racks that are 7 baskets high, and two short racks.
I got 100+ hats and maybe 25 scarfs into just six of the bins! This makes it so much easier to find the hats I am looking for and I can see at a glance what I have.
I also have buckets and buckets of yarn and it ALL fit into just 16 of the bins, all sorted by color.
He also got me two huge pattern filing cabinets (for patterns and fabric) and we'll be getting the laminated boards that top them (to use as a table top for my fabric cutting table.)
He also found industrial sized storage racks (which he'll finish out with some plywood) to make the kinds of storage shelving you find at Sam's Club. These will store a TON of stuff off the ground and they were less than $40 each. (They'll go in the main storage area for keeping our library and household goods safe while building the house.)
Let's see.. Albertsons is closing some stores and we got a ton of canning jars and supplies for half off. He got some food items and canned goods too.
He found this company that sells tools to the hardware stores and we got a bunch of shop items (for the tool shop) at wholesale price or less.
Hmmm... what other type of store needs to close??? Maybe a Dickies workclothes outlet? An office and computer supply store?

Posted - Feb 26 2007 : 09:29:56 AM It was just a couple of locations in areas with slow sales. The companies are fine.
And yes, these were awesome finds... Since we will probably be living in a travel trailer, we'll need lots of storage space for the 99.9999% of our junk that won't fit into the trailer. So we need lots of ways to maximize the space in the two barns. These are great for that purpose and the money for the racks was very well spent.
I was so worried about our stuff getting ruined in the barns. Now I can rest easier. And I may actually be able to access some of the stuff as well...

Posted - Feb 26 2007 : 08:52:13 AM Erin- That sounds like some great stuff! And there is never enough organization/storage stuff! Why do you suppose two such established stores are going out of business? Is this the area you are moving to or from? Is there a major employer in the area that's going to be pulling out soon? Might be worth finding out!

Posted - Feb 25 2007 : 09:47:27 AM I'd vote for an antique store to close...one with loads of great storage type furniture...like old general store counters....I love those. Pamela
