Posted - Apr 03 2018 : 2:10:26 PM 05/25/18: Bramble saw the vet today, xrays were taken which vet showed us and explained what the findings were. She has bone cancer (major tumor in the bone of the leg that is swollen) and it has metastasized to her lungs. She hasn't eaten more than a few bites I force fed her for 2 days, is drinking a little, very weak and off balance . . . you can see it in her eyes. We have appt. for her to go to doggie heaven and out of suffering on Tuesday . . . if she makes it until then. I"M HEARTBROKEN!!! I'm not surprised because I just have had these gut feelings . . .but IT HURTS SOOOOO MUCH!!! PRAYERS FOR ALL OF US THIS WEEKEND ARE APPRECIATED!!!!
05/22/18: Bramble was doing a bit better but today has not been a good day for her. We have been working to help her leg heal, but we still don't what happened. I've made a vet appt for Friday. PLEASE PRAY FOR HER!!! THANKS SO MUCH!! CJ
05/06/18 My sweet BRAMBLE is not doing well. She injured her right hind leg a couple weeks ago. Not sure what happened but we think she twisted it somehow. She's been limping and on some days not using it. At first she was obviously in pain and not wanted to eat much. She was doing a bit better but yesterday she was very uncomfortable and today she is MISERABLE! Not walking on it at all and struggling to hop on three legs, not eating well. Her "knee" joint on that leg is swollen . . . she saw a guy who my neighbor recommended who does animal PT and I think she is going through "catch up" from therapy healing. But my heart hurts for her!
COULD YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR HER!!!!! She's such a special doggie pal!! THANK YOU! CJ

UPDATE: We took our last steer . . . a very ornery and troublemaking one . . to the butcher yesterday. He tried to slam me into the corral wall (made with rows of guard rail) but I managed to escape his orneriness. AND, today our remaining "girl" cows were loaded up and hauled to a new home by a buyer who is younger and wants to raise Longhorns. WE ARE OFFICIALLY OUT OF THE COW BUSINESS!
WE ARE ALSO EXHAUSTED! WE WILL ALSO HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE ADJUSTMENT OF NOT HAVING COW CHORES EVERY DAY! BEEN DOING THAT FOR A LLOOOOONNNNG TIME!!! What will we do? Hmmmmmmmmm . . .
CJ
Thought I'd share this pic from the other day of my hubby, Bill and my doggie, Bramble. We have been raising Longhorn cows for the past 20+ years and are now trying to get out of the cow business.
WE ARE ALL EXHAUSTED! TOO OLD FOR THIS STUFF!
I found Bill resting in the wheelbarrow turned up on its handles after coming back from a search for an AWOL steer. Bramble had gone with me. I got to sit on the hay bale!
Thanks for letting me share! CJ

Posted - May 27 2018 : 12:29:38 PM My precious CeeJay, Skip and I just went through that with our little dog Jack. I am asking God to wrap his loving arms around Bill and you and to bless you both abundantly with peace and comfort. Having you share the many stories of Bramble in the past years, I feel like she most definitely is one of our little furry farmsisters. I will be praying for courage and strength for Bill, You and Birdie. May God bless you and keep you.

Posted - May 27 2018 : 12:12:22 PM Dianna and all Farmgirls, There is nothing to be done. She's too sick! This cancer is quite advanced and we believe by what's going on the past 3-4 days is that it has also gone into her digestive tract. She has refused ALL food for 4 days. She drinks water but that's it.
But she has the heart and spirit of a warrior and I'm amazed at her right now is how she is STILL keeping an eye . . . as best she can . . on Bill and Me. She's a cattle dog so she has incredible "herder/protector" instincts. We've both told her that while we do NOT want her to go, it is okay for her to let go . . . she doesn't need to suffer any longer. So, for now, we just hang out with her and talk about everything, pet her a lot and love on her! And try to deal with our own aching hearts! Darn it! THANKS FOR KIND WORDS and PRAYERS! CJ

Posted - May 26 2018 : 10:49:51 AM CeeJay, I am so sorry that Bramble has cancer and it has spread. Poor little Darling!!! My daughter just lost her Great Dane to the same disease a month ago. A tumor was also in her leg and swelled up quickly sending them to the vet for help. They also had to made the painful decision to have her put down . It is very painful to lose your sweetest fur friend!! When I lost my Bump kitty this past December, it was terribly hard and hubby and I were heart broken.
I pray that these final days together with Bramble will be peaceful and that she can rest. Farmgirl Hugs for this extra hard time you are faced with.

Posted - May 23 2018 : 04:43:19 AM Ceejay--I love all living creatures---but I hate cows. I feel so sorry for them and I cry when I see them in cattle trucks. I could never stand to fool with cattle. Goats and donkeys are so much more pettable and I even kiss them---LOL. I was at a cook out at our friends house and she was talking about butchering their next cow and she said she just saw steaks when she looked at that cow. I felt kinda sick and could hardly eat the steak she had cooked---LOL> Still praying for your sweet doggie. I mean don't talk about eating a cow when it is alive and standing by the fence while you are cooking another cow. UGH.

Posted - May 14 2018 : 3:19:49 PM Sorry to hear about Bramble. Hope he does have a speedy recovery.
Our little big girl has been having trouble getting up on the bed so Daddy put the matress on the floor. Now we sleep almost on the ground. This is ok but I am sorta fluffy and getting out of bed in the morning isn't easy. I guess I am not the head Diva of the house.

Posted - May 14 2018 : 11:00:01 AM Will pray for your sweet doggie. I had a bad dog experience last August. Even though I live a mile and two tenths down a dirt road---some dumbhead had to drive down in here and pull up in my drive way. He hit my pug on the way out but I did not know it until later. He broke her hips on both sides and we had to take her to Virginia Tech and have her operated on. She could not walk for two months--- I kept her in a crib. Then I had to leash walk her for two months. She had a few issues and I had to keep taking her to our local vet. It was a big job---almost like waiting on a person. She is fine now and so happy---the light of my life. So I really do understand how you feel about Bramble.

Posted - May 13 2018 : 3:36:29 PM Bramble has her ups and downs, still limping. We've had a PT do therapy/massage on her and that does help. We do Ace wraps on her at night which is a challenge. Think putting an Ace wrap on a turkey leg . . you know that shape?? But it does help! Not sure what will be the next step. Therapist says "compression, ice and time".. Continued prayers are appreciated! CJ

Posted - May 07 2018 : 4:02:02 PM CJ, I am sorry that Bramble is hurting but glad to hear that today is better. My son-in-law is the 4th generation to work his family dairy farm. They have 1200 acres and 250 cows that they milk every day. He works SO hard 7 days a week with minimal outside help. When his Daddy passes, he and his sister will split the farm. He wants the crops and to be DONE with cows. The crops you can leave for a bit but the cows get milked twice/day no matter what. I told him you were done with cows. He laughed and said “well, good for them. If they get to missing it they can come find me and I can bring back all those cow memories as they work for me!” Enjoy your free time.

Posted - May 07 2018 : 1:02:49 PM Thank you farmgirls! She is doing a bit better today, eating better and a little more perky. Still has swollen leg, not walking much . . . an using ice packs on her. I've been giving her a natural pain reliever/anti-inflammatory which seems to help. It's hard watching your aging pets that you've had all their lives get sick or infirm. THANKS for your continued prayers! HUGS TO YOU ALL! CJ

Posted - May 07 2018 : 06:26:43 AM CJ, I hope Bramble gets better soon. Maybe the vet could give you some doggie rain medication to help her when the pain gets bad. I know we had to use some medication when my dog developed painful arthritis in one hip. It helped him a lot. There are many safe pain control options for dogs these days that are well tolerated and very helpful. Get better soon, Bramble!

Posted - Apr 22 2018 : 3:41:41 PM My husband and I are so lucky. My husband is no longer to care for the cattle here on the ranch. Our son is now taking over. We still get to see the cows and be around the day to day operations. It is true. A family cattle business is very hard work.

Posted - Apr 21 2018 : 1:19:52 PM CeeJay, I totally get that there comes a time when you just want to stop doing something.. And, raising cows is intense, so I bet it will be wonderful to free up your time and resources. With the weather getting better soon, maybe it is time for you three to take Reivers Rest out to some nice camping sites and enjoy some campfire dinners and book reading!!
