We're thinking about getting a wood cook stove as a back up for those days when the sun is hidden and the solar power limps.
Does anyone have one and what kind is it? What problems do you have with it? What are its strong points? Where can I find one?
I'm particularly fascinated with the Waterford Stanley, the Baker's Oven from Australia and the Pioneer Maids.
Does anyone know where I can find one used???

Erin, I have a cast iron Victor Junior wood-burning cookstove that I'm trying to sell or swap -- dates back to the 1920s. I can't use it because our chimneys are no longer safe and can't be relined without pretty much tearing down th e ouse and rebuilding it.

NO, the person on Craigslist never responded back, so I'm assuming the stove was already sold.
We did find a cookbook this weekend that is entirely recipes written for use on a wood stove/campfire.

Our homestead has one of the old little summer kitchen houses. I would love to restore it and add a woodburning cookstove. I favor the monarchs myself. ;)

I learned to cook in a dutch oven and you can't burn your food, no matter how hard you try. I'm not domestically inclined so that's saying a lot!! Anything you can cook/bake in a regular oven, you can do in a dutch. Also, we had a wood stove for heat and I learned to cook on top of it.

Called about the stove but haven't heard back. Thought we'd found a camper (travel trailer) too but it sold before we got a chance to call.

We had one when I was little.
They come in very handy in the winter time. that was our only cookstove.
When I got in the 2nd grade we moved to another town. I think my Mom was secerly glad she had all new modern things.
They are very handy; but you have to be very carefull with them and keep them in good working condition.
Mom made the best meals I can steal taste her chicken and dumplings and black berry and raspberry dumplings and yummy things she made. pinkroses |

oh my gosh - YES, I'm in Dallas, so I'm going to call about this stove tomorrow morning! THank you SO SO much! I'd heard of Craigslist here but hadn't checked it out yet. I'm going to see what else I can find there. Thank you so much! (Cross your fingers that the stove works and is not already sold - the ones I have see so far cost thousands.)

Try Craigslist.com and just look for your state or one close to you. Craigslist is a great online classifieds site. (if you already do craigslist sorry i have run into many people who don't know what it is.) As for which one to use i can't be much help i just have an earth stove with a flat top that i cook on but i to would love a wood cook stove.

We have recently thought about building a stone oven outdoors. We are4 slowly but surely getting the solar action running, but man it's expensive and the time it takes to do it is hard to find.
When we get our outdoor wood boiler, I think it will probably jump everything into high gear.
I think a wood stove is a great idea, provided you are one to stay on top of the wood and make sure you have enough, you know!? A few poeple I know don't, including, sadly, my parents.
I would go to eBay and take a peek at what they have there. We have found a lot of really good deals on woods stoves recently, you just have to scour to ads.
