Oh my goodness, in the past few weeks I have gotten some AMAZING things at the thrift shops...I am going to take pictures of them later, but here is an overview:
More wood blocks for our ever constructing in the playroom....I am unsure how many wooden blocks we have now, but I bet it amounts to the billions...(.50)
Bags and bags of buttons The one bag cost $7 but it was filled with rhinestone and glass beads and butttons
fabric in the yards and yards and yards paying at most $2 for the yardage
6 pairs of wool socks for me and for Rob (I have made af ew from some felted sweaters for Grace and booties for Zoe and they LOVE THEM!) for a DIME a pair!!
A few shelves for in my craft room for storage
various prices ranging from .50 to $3
knitting needles $1
Some flannel and wool clothing for the cold days of working outside with Rob doing wood. Prices vary but no more than $3
WOOL TIGHTS FOR MAMA!!!! $1 YAY!!!
My most favorite prize in the past few weeks has been these two vintage lamps. We have to re-wire them, but when we get our new sofa from Ikea this month, they will go perfectly with what Ihave envisioned for the livingroom motif. They are very Roman looking, gawdy and beautiful. They are women fixing htemselves. One is wearing a blue and green set of robes and the other is wearing red and pink. The green and blue one is fixing herself in her clothes and the red and pink one is fixing her hair. I love them and better yet, Rob loves them too. I paid $6 for both of them. The guy I bought them from said he had them priced way higher, but no one was buying them. He couldn't understand why., So I know they are worth far more than I paid. I am going to do some investigating on them because they are jsut way too cool.
Thats about it other than a few random everyday things....YAY! Going agian this weekend!

Ricki,
With the kids, I just line up thier feet wih the seam on side of the sleeve (foot is in the sleeve when I do this, with the cuff up as far on the leg as it nees to be,) then I pin around the toes giving room for wiggle. We take it off, I cut it out and then turn it inside out, pin it back together and sew it up using a straight stitch, then an overcasting stitch. Simple.
I wash felt them first then cut.
The socks are more slipper like, but they work. They are nice and cozy and Grace needs to take them off now and again because her feet get really hot (thank the universe she has not my poor circulation!!)

Tasha, do you use a pattern for making socks from felted wool? I'd love to make some but not sure how to go about it so that the seams don't cause problems. Thanks!
Oh! Also, do you all take the sweaters apart first and then felt them, or do you felt them first and then cut them apart?

Tasha what wonderful things you found! I think you must be the queen of thrifting!  I have been trying to get to the thrift stores but things keep popping up...today being broken water lines a block down and a boil order. yikes I cannot wait to get my lil piece of country someday soon.

Catherine, we wold never ever have anything shipped here from IKEA, it is far too expensive...we might as well just buy tw couches! I don't think it will be this weekend, but it will be soon, within the coming month for sure.

Where do you go thrifting?? I have a Salvation Army near my house, but TBH, we don't live in a wealthy area, so not much goes that way. And I've never been able to find such cool things as vintage fabric or buttons in a thrift shop! And not too many interesting clothes, either. How do you find that stuff?? I need thrift lessons or something. :) |
