At a garage sale last Saturday I saw a bunch of thimbles. Several were in 3 small display racks and some were just loose in a box. I couldn't make up my mind on them so I asked how much for ALL of them. The man said "ALL of them?" I said yes. He said he had sold just a few of them earlier that morning, and then he said "$15.00." I said "SOLD!" They were made of metal, plastic, wood, glass; some had moveable parts or had raised additions on them; many had animals, birds, or flowers painted on them. There were several that had advertisements on them (2 from a funeral home?), a few state souvenirs, one is made of abalone, a few pewter, one was cloisonne, and one was clear glass with a Christmas wreath added to it. One was so small it wouldn't even fit on my pinkie - could it have been a child's thimble? When I got home and counted them there were 102 thimbles.

Here's a picture of most of my treasure except for the single ones.

Did I do good, or what? Now to decide where/how to display them. I also have about 37 thimbles from Ed's sister's estate. I will photograph them later.

Thanks, all. Yes, I did GREAT! Love the collection. And I have more thimbles from Ed's sister's estate to add to them. Now to find the wall space to display them.

Wow! I'll bet it wasn't the collector who put those in a garage sale! So glad they went to someone who will appreciate them!

How fascinating! I love the history of thimbles. This was a great find and a large assortment at that! Looks like you will be needing a bigger display case.

What a nice find Linda. I wonder who spent the time to collect them? You could do a little research to see if some are extra old or have some value.
