Winnie,
The Amish that live in Sarasota have relatives that live around me. I have visited their little store and the other community goes to the Farmers Market every Saturday. My husband spoke with them this last Saturday and that is how we found out about them. They have the best veggies I have seen for a long time. We might have the good luck of having one of them come up and plow our fields for our garden next year.

May the stars carry your sadness away. May the flowers fill your heart with beauty, and may hope forever wipe away your tears.

We have a Mennonite church around 20 minutes from us. We have visited the church and been invited to a couple of their homes for a meal after. One of the ladies is a widow and she will do the hand quilting for anyone who wants it done. I have thought about taking a couple to her. I love the hand quilting but can't seem to squeeze out the time for it. She does beautiful work and will usually have one or two of the younger girls help her. One of the families runs a farm market across the street from their house.

We have an amish community in Mio, Michigan. I go down there which is about 40 minutes from us, to get my feed for my chickens and such. They have a feed store, a hardware store, a bakery, a bulk food store, a shoe store and with the shoe store is a small fabric shop. They mostly carry the knits they wear but they do have some cute 100% cottons for quilt making! We go down there every once in a while and spend a few hours. it is a lot of fun. oh yes in the spring they have a greenhouse that opens as well. The food from the bakery is absolutely wonderful!!

The hand quilting skills of most of the Amish and Mennonite are exquisite. I love their quilts.

We go to Kutztown,Pa to an auction. Depending on when,it's plants, vegetables, eggs, etc. That is Mennonite country. Buggies, horses, bare feet, dresses, hair coverings. Apple cider and pumpkins will be coming soon. People who have roadside stands come and buy their goods to sell. It's fun to bid and win what you want. Several years ago I had a Mennonite lady quilt, by hand, a few old quilt tops I had. They came out beautifully. We love to go there.

My boyfriend and I will be going up to Elkhart, IN, for an RV Expo Sept 18-22. I love the Amish shops there. I will definitely be stopping at a few shops. I need to get one more 2-foot barn quilt for my porch. LOL!

Love going Lancaster here. We have come to know a few Amish families that we now keep in touch with on a regular basis. Enjoy stopping in to visit whenever we go over now.

In Spokane we have the 'Heuterites' (like Mennonites, but they drive cars and use gas powered tools)...
Their Village/Compound was less then 10miles from my home,, and on Thursdays in the little town of Airway Heights(3 miles down the road from me) they would have their little farmers market... awesome breads and wonderful veggies...

Winnie,
I guess I never thought of the Amish being in Florida. Good to know. We have a few here near me that ride the bikes with the baskets. Guess they don't have to stay down home on the farm. How nice that they have a restaurant. What do they serve? Nancy Jo

Nancy, I love visiting the Amish country and enjoying their wonderful baked goods, food and farm stands. Believe it or not, we have a small Amish community here in Florida in Sarasota. Apparently, the original settlement was a vacations place set up in the 1940s and Amish would come in the winter for a vacation if they could find farm help to cover the animals. They rode down on buses and stayed in these cabins. Over time a few stayed and today they have a community in an area of the city. Instead of horses, they all ride these adult tricycles with large baskets on the back for carrying goods. They run a delicious restaurant with all of their traditional foods. It was such a fun place to visit even though it is nothing like the one I saw in Lancaster.Pa. They still dress the same and adhere to other cultural practices , but because they live in the city, they do not raise animals or drive horse buggies.

Does this count? I bought two beautiful Yukon Gold potatoes from a little Amish boy at the Farmers' Market yesterday. Ha ha ha. Our Tuesday market uptown always has several Amish vendors, but I needed a couple of taters and this little kid was just so stinkin' cute that I had to pick him.

When I Managed the Book & Gift Stores here...I bought signs and Blanket Chests from them (via orders)
for the Stores. They were spendy but the Craftsmanship was amazing.

Love the wood bowl. Another Great find...Amish or not!

Amish country sounds interesting but it is so far from us! Perhaps someday we can visit "back there"!
