This is the first time something like this has happened to me. I received a fake e-mail from the SSA. The scammer was trying to access my social security info. I have also received phone calls from a fake area code. I am concerned this person is cyber-stalking me. Weird things have been going on with my computer. He keeps trying to sign into my e-mail account (I changed the password). Now I am worried I will have to change my phone number as well. I am not even sure it's safe to use my computer or cell phone. The police said to contact the state attorney general. Do I actually have to wait till something bad happens before someone will act on this? Should I contact my lawyer?

Do you have anti virus protection on your computer? You might want to do a scan to see if you have been hit. I would also delete all cookies from your history. I always power down my computer when I am not using it. I have read about hackers using the camera on your lap top to check/video you while you type your passwords, not sure if it's true. I just like everything turned off!
The safest thing is to just not click on questionable links. I will admit, it is getting harder and harder to tell the difference. Keep in mind that financial companies would never ask you to re-activate your account from an e-mail - unless you requested a password reset. I just do not react to any e-mails anymore. If it truly is a legitimate e-mail, I'll figure it out when it's time for me to visit the site. I also never use a link from an e-mail (unless I ask to reset a password).
Be aware of free software from non reputable companies. A lot of that stuff is meant to invade you computer with non essential stuff, possibly virus, worms and Trojans and what ever new stuff coming out. I'm losing track!
Also if possible, re-load (wipe out your drive) your computer - provided you have access to all the software. That is time consuming but would definitely solve your problem. You could also take your computer to Staples Geek squad and have them look at it.

Oh my goodness how scary. I also suggest you contact your lawyer. They can help tell you what to do to hopefully stop this creep before something bad happens. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. Let us know what happens.

Cindy...that is very scary for you I am sure! I'm glad you contacted the police...but you
are right...nobody can actually do anything until something bad happens. I would however just
contact your Attorney merely to apprise him or her of the Circumstance you find yourself in...in the case you need to call them in the future regarding a criminal act.
Praying for you through this. Please give us occasional updates. Try NOT to get too Freaked
out over this. Do everything in your power to re-secure your passwords and computer.

Oh, my, Cindy...This is horrible! I feel so badly for you! I would definitely file a police report and follow up with a call to the state attorney general, as they have recommended. This is serious business. And yes, in the meantime, I would definitely contact my attorney - actually, probably before anyone else, because he or she will know exactly what to do. The attorney will most likely give you advice over the phone initially, and then if anything happens, your attorney will probably have to be retained. Did you also contact your email/internet provider to let them know?
I hate that people do this. If they'd spend half the time they spend on scamming people on actually finding a job and actually working to EARN a living like everyone else... Don't get me started.
I'll be saying prayers that God protects you. Please let us know how things go.
