I need some guidance:

I purchased 6 ladder back chairs that were covered in old splashes of food and an enormous amount of wax and cigarette smoke buildup-I tried using warm water with vinegar and just a smidgeon of dawn. I scrubbed the chairs down TWICE. Now the chairs-slats mostly-appear very dull -waxy and streaky. I know I cannot have a pristine finish cause the chairs are very old, but I just HATE the way they look.

What can I use to really clean the chairs and what should I use to wax or oil them to a deep soft shine?

I have used lemon oil in the past and tried it on one chair --it just appeared wet and slippery. On another chair--- I tried some Butcher's paste wax and it looked nice at first but after buffing it out it also appeared waxy and dull.

Grrrrrr-----

Would appreciate your advice girls!!

I use 1/4 cup vinegar with 3/4 cup canola oil. Rub on the wood, and it will restore to it's original color. For me it works like a charm. Hope this helps.

I use a product called Howard's Restore a Finish It is in colors I think what is does in reactivate the finish that is on it and smooths it out then you follow with a wax by Howard.

I've used Murphey's Oil on kitchen cabinets with good results.
