We're going to be in Southern California end of February near San Diego, Encinitas, Oceanside area. My husband is going to attend NASCAR races with his friend, I am looking for ideas to do on my own - they already have tickets and if they got a ticket for me it would be likely to be in another section -- and I really am not a huge NASCAR fan.
So am looking for farmgirl-related events or tours or just plain old things to do! Any ideas?

Brenda,
If you end up at the San Diego Zoo also plan to visit Balboa Park. It's across the parking lot from the zoo. There is a wonderful collection of museums, gardens, walking paths and a lath house with all kins of tropical plants. One of the infomation/gift shops had a lot of brochures of other places to visit, garden tours and farms (they may be closed for the winter though). There is also a very nice resturant for lunch.
The gaslamp district is a fun/funky/trendy shopping area with lots of unusual boutiques and fun bistros. If you have a car and like to see how the high end crowd lives, La Jolla is about 20 minutes North. The Scripps Institue, a marine wildlife research facility, is also close by and interesting.
The wine country of So Cal is in Temecula which is inland from San Diego and a bit of a drive. I haven't been in ages, but hear it has become quite the wine lovers stop.

It sounds as though you have a great plan. The herb farms sounds especially interesting. I used to go to San Diego for weekend getaways when I lived in LA. My favorite thing was to sit at an outdoor cafe and enjoy great coffee while viewing the ocean. (Usually my LA room mates were still sleeping). Have a wonderful time.

Most of what I know in Calif is where I grew up and still have family..central coast..sounds like you arn't going that far north..but if you do..I can sure help you with ideas!

OK, I found a guidebook and found a couple of things that sound interesting, a bakery/restaurant where you can see all the bread-making equipment behind a glass door, and a couple of herb farms, one where they do soapmaking on the premises. Also there is a fiber-arts gallery in La Jolla, and a reference to some of those antique stores that Laura mentioned.

I'll echo Melanie, the Wild Animal Park is well worth your time
It might require a bit of reserach, but touring a few lavender farms might be in order. From surfing on the net, I know this region is great for lavender farming. The Sonoma Valley is close by, they have wine and lavender!

I agree with the idea of the San Diego Wild Animal Park - an amazing place. You could easily spend a few days there. And if you have little ones, Legoland is right near there, too. I recommend a trip to the library or bookstore for a peak @ Frommer's guide to the area. I used it a couple of years ago for a trip there, & found it quite useful. Hope you have a great time! |

Well there's always SeaWorld, but there is also a fabulous maratime museum with tall ships, the lighthouse and monument at the Point Reyes.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

LOL... Two years ago we visited DH's friend, we visited a car museum and an art museum - was that Balboa Park?, and drove past a lot of neat scenery. Let's see if I can remember - Torrey Pines?
We also went to Old Town in San Diego. Also visited an aircraft carrier turned into tourist attraction... So, I probably wouldn't want to retrace my steps through those things.
I want to stay away from Disneyland and Legoland - or anything touristy, specifically designed to separate me and my money!!
I'd love to go on a wine-tasting tour --- but since I'll be travelling alone, mixing wine with driving would probably not be a great idea.
I might be happy just visiting fiber arts stores, and antique stores sounds like a good idea. I'd love to visit some kind of class or seminar on any kind of fiber arts - knitting,spinning, weaving, quilting - I saw that Stitches West is that weekend, but it looks like it is 6 hours away from where we'll be staying.
I'm also interested in amateur radio, I guess I could take some of my radios along and see if I could make any contacts!
Maybe I'm weird, but I also like factory tours. Always interesting to see what other manufacturers/producers are up to. I'd also like farm tours if you know of any. Packing plants, food processing, etc would be great.
I probably will want to go to the beach for a while - where's a good place to go?

What kind of things are you interested in?? There are some great Antique shops in the area. It is beautiful to drive up 101 in that area and stop in the darling towns along the way. San Diego has a great Zoo and Wild animal park. I know that area well and can give you some ideas if you tell me what you like to do.
