Anybody familiar with workplace laws/rights?
This week I returned to my job from an approved medical leave, but it's been awful. I asked to work at home for reduced pay but was shot down. My old position is gone since they permanently replaced me while I was out, they have physically moved me out of my actual office, and seriously demoted my responsibilites: I have 2 degrees and was doing highly-skilled work, but am now working as a mail clerk. My job title and pay are the same, but that's about it. Today I was actually criticized by my new superior for sitting in an "inappropriate manner." I honestly think they are trying to retailiate for leaving them shorthanded, and trying to get me to quit. Any suggestions!?!?! |

Man that's a tough one! You must really be upset, I know I would be. How long have you been back to work so far? Would a little more time help to heal the relationship? Is there anyone you trust, other than your new supervisor (obviously) you could ask to see what's going on? Or someone who can watch out for an open position more fitting your job skills and abilities?
Is a a big company or a smaller one? I'm sure not an expert on legal stuff, but I do know that smaller companies are not held to the same standards as larger ones (like Fortune 100 companies, for example).
What's the education/skills of your new supervisor? Any chance there's some fear there, that you are better qualified for their job than they are? I know I got stuck in that situation once and it's not a good place to be. That guy was so bad he eventually got asked to retire early to avoid embarrassment to the company (we think).
Give it a little time, document everything (in case you eventually have to go to court - or just for the next performance appraisal or possible escalation within the company) Make sure you're not perceived as thinking your current assignment is "beneath you" but also make sure that you (and everyone else) know that it's TEMPORARY!!!
