Hey girls,
Thought I would ask for your suggestions.
My husband will be leaving work soon and asked me to think of a good movie to get on the way home. Something that the whole family can watch.
My mind is drawing a total blank. Can you help me?
I told him about A tree grows in Brooklyn.
Any other suggestions? I am looking for old movies. I have not seen a new movie except polar express and charlotte's web, that did not have some sort of sexual content or bad language.
That is why I think the old movies are best.

Hey! Thanks for all of the great ideas!
I wrote some down so I will be prepared next time.
Someone wrote about the Disney Movies ( he newer ones) not being suitable for children.
I have not even seen the Lion King so that tells you how far behind I am. I started not trusting the Disney Co. right after I heard that Pretty Woman was put out by them. I liked the movie but all of Disneys innocence was lost after that.

All of these have some language and a little bit of sexual content, but the wonderful relationships between the children and the adults, and the good choices the kids make in the end make them something I'd want my kids to see with me, and discuss afterwards.
October Sky - rated PG
Walking Across Egypt - rated PG-13
The Reivers(1969) - rated PG13, but the story and especially the last scene with the grandfather is very good. |

Don't forget Into The West w/ Gabriel Byrne and two adorable little boys who are trying to save a horse in the middle of Ireland and they
become "cowboys". It was an unusual movie like secret of Roan Innish
but one that creeps into your heart as the movie goes on. We watched it again over the holidays and my 13 year old smiled and said "it's still good". High praise from that age group!

Some we have liked have been Holes (for older kids), Harriet the Spy, Never Ending Story, The Dark Crystal, and Nanny McPhee |

We really like the movie "Stand by Me" about a group of little boys who are friends.

I had forgotten about the Secret of Roan Inish - I just loved that movie, too. Thanks for the reminder! Also, there are the "Anne of Green Gables" movies that I think are wonderful, too.

A word of warning for all you disney movie fans. My 15 year old daughter said that alot of people are setting their children down in front of the Little Mermaid remake and that it is NOT a kid's movie. She said they had to edit and remake alot of it because it was so bad, and that even now it is definitely not something to let your kiddos watch unless you watch first and it is within your approved guidelines. I guess talk at youth group and school isn't always bad !

I know it is too late, but Lindy we love Swiss Family Robinson, the older version of Charlie and the Choc. Factory, Marry Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Narnia...I could probably think of some more, but we do the oldies too.

My family's all-time favorite movie is one called The Secret of Roan Inish. If you haven't seen it, you are in for an evening of pure magic & wonder! Another great one is called A Fairy's Tail. Not just for girls - my 2 boys loved it. You didn't mention the ages of your children - if I had that info, I'd be happy to suggest a few more.

Secondhand Lions is a great movie too. There might be a little language in it, but my whole family (and my students) think it is awesome. Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are in it, as is Haley Joel Osmand (the I see dead people kid). Great movie about love and honor, etc. Plus it is funny.

I would HIGHLY reccommend Night at the Museum!!!! Course you cant rent it yet. Had only two bad words that I noticed. The d word and the s word but I think the s word was mumbled so you might not be sure that was what was really said. I loved this movie. Course I have a HUGE crush on Owen Wilson too!

He just called and said that he got the old Disney 20,000 leagues under the sea.

We just went to see A Night at the Museum and was pleasantly pleased. It's rated PG and there's absolutely nothing objectionable in the entire movie. Just a little scary and then just fun for the kids!
What a surprise! Won't win an Academy Award but it is definitely good family viewing. Add it to your list!
What about the Sarah Plain and Tall and Meadowlark movies? Some of my favs!
