Well here I am doing my Christmas, yes Christmas, baking. On Christmas Eve the bake element in my oven burned up. So Tuesday I ordered a new one and finally it arrived and I put it in. Now, since I had cookie dough already made up, I am baking.
Also still picking up storm debris and trying to find a large chipper to grind up all these branches and trees. I may have to hire someone. Grrr.
I also put some new pictures on my blog. So take a look if you care to.

Thank you, Ann. The pond and waterfall are on our property. After the waterfall the creek goes underground, under our pasture, and then above ground in the woods. We feel very fortunate to be here. MB

Four of us raked and burned all yesterday afternoon, just the mountain of debris out of flower beds and branches strewn along the driveway. I found an inconspicuous and safe place to make a bonfire. Today I will start on the other side of the creek. As for the big trees that came down up the back, they'll just have to stay where they have fallen. It is too rocky and uneven to even think of salvaging any of the timber. On one hand it seems like such a waste as many of the trees are large and straight and would make excellent wood. But getting them out would be next to impossible, so I'm looking at it as mother nature just renewing the forest floor. It would be a dangerous job as well to try and get the timber out, as there are a good many "widow makers" (trees that have fallen and are leaning against others).
We will buck up the five big alders that are laying across the garden and the big fir beside the house, and probably sell the firewood. At $300/cord which is the going rate, we'll hopefully make enough to rebuild the footbridge that floated away in the flood and replace the squashed raspberries!
This winter has been quite the ride!

Di,I did go to the fire dept and ask about a fire and yes I can. It has to be watched continually. We do have water close by and we do have a tractor with a bucket so that is an option. It's just how many fires do I want and where do I start. With a chipper I could always use the wood chips. That was my thinking anyway.
I can't imagine what you are going to do with all the damage you have on your place, Di. What are you going to do??? MB

Your place looks like ours Mary Beth. I finally got a chance to put on the hiking boots and head up to the back of our property this afternoon. I was shocked! It is 100 times worse than I ever imagined. In one spot alone I counted 17 huge fir trees down. Fortunately no damage to anything other than the trees themselves as it is all old growth forest, but my hiking trail I made is now more along the lines of a jungle gym!

Di

As an afterthought, can't you have a bonfire??

I think it is always a good time for cookies..haha I didn't get ANY nice sugar cookies this year and didn't make any little snowball cookies either..I may be baking some this week too. I am about sick of pumpkin pie now though.
I enjoyed your blog MB...your boys look like they are having so much fun helping!!
