Posted - Mar 28 2016 : 12:23:44 PM Ed and I went to Tin Lizard Thrift store in Garland, TX, Saturday - a shop we saw when riding by on the train a week ago. Ed's comment before we went was "We don't NEED anything, but we can look. Well, we SCORED! Ed bought a super neat Hoosier Cabinet - completely made out of metal - for his kitchen (if I had room, I would have gotten it for ME!). I had never seen a metal one before. It has a flour bin with attached sifter, a sugar jar that pivots out so you can dispense your sugar right into your measuring cup, a rolling pin on its own hanger, spice racks, towel racks, several hooks for measuring cups and spoons and other utensils, and 3 drawers (the bottom one is a great bread box). The table-top pulls out an additional foot making a nice large table top. The top is not completely smooth, due, I'm sure, to being lovingly used every day. Also in it was 3 wooden recipe boxes with old, hand-written recipes. Here are pictures.
Then I got a box of 60 9-patch quilt blocks for $1.00, 9 pieced quilt tops for $20.00 (some hand pieced and some machine pieced), 1 hand stitched wall hanging or rug with 4 ducks ($5.00), 2 small train cases for $5.00 each, an old Gimbels sewing machine for $10.00, and a neat old plant stand for my porch ($5.00). The owner also donated 11 double-knit quilt tops to my quilt guild to finish and donate to veterans.
What a haul!

Posted - Apr 12 2016 : 8:35:35 PM No foolin'? So did I! ! If I may be so bold as to ask, where in Richardson and how long ago? I just loved it there! The sense of community was wonderful. There was always something going on, Cottonwood Creek Festival, Wildflower Festival, Santa's Village... the police and firemen were always there and let the kids climb on the trucks and flash the lights on the cars. I loved it that they were not portrayed as the bad guys to all the impressionable young kids, many who need positive role models.

Posted - Mar 29 2016 : 08:41:48 AM He had the Hoosier priced at $350. We added a tool for Ed, my 9 quilt tops, sixty 9-patch squares, 2 train cases, sewing machine, plant stand, recipe boxes, and wall hanging and ended at $350. LOL!

Posted - Mar 29 2016 : 08:32:10 AM Linda, just wondering what you paid for the hoosier? I have my Grandmother's hoosier in my house. I love it so much and would never even think of selling it. I'm just wondering what it would be worth for insurance purposes. Since we have many antiques, we have been working on taking videos of each room. We are doing this in case of fire.
I have never seen a hoosier that is all metal. That is kinda rare, I think.

Posted - Mar 29 2016 : 07:45:26 AM This sewing machine motor and belt work, but the needle doesn't go up and down. Think it just needs a good cleaning and oiling. I got it for $10 and that's a good deal. It is my 22nd or 23rd sewing machine. LOL! 12 are antiques.

Posted - Mar 29 2016 : 07:33:10 AM Does your sewing machine work? Any metal machine is worth more than the plastic machines of today. I was given an old Bernina machine that I took to be serviced and the owner tried to buy it from me. He said if I ever did sell it I should contact him first. It's the machine I use all the time. One time I bought a sewing machine at a thrift store and when I asked if it worked the lady said she didn't even know how to plug the cords in. Lol! I couldn't believe it since she was our age. Didn't we all have to sew outfits in home ec back then? I guess she was sick that year!

Posted - Mar 29 2016 : 07:19:25 AM WOW! I love thrift stores. You seem to go for the same things I would look for. I have never seen a metal Hoosier. I have one very similar but it is oak and has an accordion door in the middle where all the spice racks and flour and sugar bins are. Keep posting all your treasures you find. I love seeing them.

Posted - Mar 28 2016 : 3:07:58 PM Kat Mom and CeeJay - Thanks. Yep. Great finds. My pocketbook it not safe in a thrift shop, especially when the prices are good. And he told us when we went in that we shouldn't pay attention to the prices - he wanted the stuff to sell. And good deals were there.
Kat - Ed is my boyfriend, not hubby. LOL! And we are not good for each other in that we are BOTH "collectors". LOL! We end up with a lot of stuff we really don't NEED! I've been wanting train bases to decorate, now to come up with ideas. I saw some that a lady had painted with Chalk paint on the outside and lined with vintage trailer fabrics on the inside. Both of them have linings that need to come out. Then I will add batting and fabrics and trims inside and paint or decoupage the outside.
CeeJay - Some of the recipes are definitely old and interesting. Handwriting in both boxes is nice cursive penmanship. Some recipes are cut from newspapers and magazines. I want to try a few of the recipes. I also have my mother's huge recipe box and love making the tried and true recipes I remember from when I was growing up.

Posted - Mar 28 2016 : 2:53:02 PM I'm thinking those recipes will be something VERY interesting to look through. I have my mom's recipe box and some of them are in her handwriting, which wasn't very good. Some are typewritten, which I did when I was in high school and learning to type! :D CJ
