SANTA and I are going to town today to look for a lap-top computer to stuff in my christmas stocking! do you gurlz have one? do you find that you use it a lot? would you use it a lot if you had one?

i mostly want mine for TRAVEL. I love to write .. and find it would be so much faster for the stories that tumble rapidly from me .. if i could type them. i'm a fast typist .. and this way, i wouldn't forget so many things before getting pen to paper. and t'would be fun when i do my 'backroad ramblings' alone .. to be able to hit a hotel at night and check in with my 'homies'.

actually, another convenience is that the few times that both honey hunk and i want to be 'on-line' .. a lap top would allow that. it's really no 'biggie' .. cuz' we usually just wait until the other is finished .. but from time to time .. i'll get on a 'writing roll' .. and hank wants to check the newspaper for 'world events' .. and i jus' don't want to get up and turn the computer over to him!

i have a GATEWAY computer at home .. and i saw a GATEWAY lap-top a couple days ago. anyone else have a good one to recommend?

xo

My son and I both have one -- his is a Dell and mine is a Gateway. We have almost the exact same "stuff". We both love ours, but his has had a few problems and mine has been trouble-free, and in all honesty, he treats his computer much better than I do mine! Also, he's had 2 "recalls" -- one on the battery and another on something else (it's been over a year and I've forgotten what it was). My husband swears the Dell is the better computer, but I love my Gateway.

I'm sorry I missed this thread earlier. You will have to know how you like your Gateway after you have a little experience with it.

I've had several laptops, previously I bought Compaq's(now owned by HP) because I had experience with them at work. After some serious issues with HP customer support over a hardware problem, I decided NEVER AGAIN would I buy Compaq or Dell. They would not help me, and the agent would not transfer me to a supervisor or anyone who could help me. Eventually both of the hard drives quit in these computers, and I decided just to get a new one.

My latest is a Dell and so far so good, haven't really even needed customer support. I was so happy I recommended my stepmom get a Dell desktop. She had a problem with some software, called at 8:00 pm, and had a replacement the next morning at 10:00 by overnight courier. I was really impressed.

I had an IBM laptop at work for 3 years but the processor kept overheating and the PC would just quit on me. The service man came next business day each time, but I was somewhat disappointed that they didn't fix the root of the problem. This was a better problem than losing a hard drive, because I do not tend to back things up as frequently as I should. But I would have rather not had any problems at all!

My boss loves Macs but he is SO enthusiastic about them I tend to doubt that they can really be that good.... LOL And he's not a techie person. He does a lot of digital camera and video editing and the hardware/software combination he has seems to work for him. Actually I think you can spend some additional money and get software that allows you to run PC-style software on your MAC. But my boss says, why would you want to? LOL

I've never had a Gateway laptop or known anyone else who has, so I am curious as to what your experience will be!

oh gurlfrenz! SANTA got me a GATEWAY today! We went to BEST BUY .. and i know there are lovers and haters of lots of brands of computers. the salesman we had today HATES dell .. and without me telling him any favorites .. recommended the GATEWAY to us .. and since that is what i have and haven't had problems with it (desktop) .. and since the last two salespeople we have talked to ... recommended it .. (and it's only FIVE POUNDS!) .. well, i just decided to go with Gateway. It was a thousand .. but we 'bit the bullet' and just got the one that seemed to fit my needs the most.

my daughter has a mac home computer but says it is not compatible with some software they would like to have. i guess since i've had success with gateway ever since using computers .. i just thought that the best way to go.

thanks again to everyone who told of their favs! xo

Frannie,
We've had terrible problems with our high end model Dell. Some people love them, but for us it was a disaster. The Inspiron 1600 in particular had major issues. We got stuck with a $1600 paper weight. Dell's tech service was horrible-5 hours plus on the phone-transferred from fool to fool. I do hear that is some better now though.
I have Gateway, nearly 8 years old, here at home & no problems with it. Next time I update, I will go Mac.
My son has a Mac home computer and a Mac powerbook-a smallish version laptop, perfect for travel! I highly recommend Mac if it's in your budget. I think the powerbook runs about $500.
Good luck to you Frannie!

Count me in as another MAC lover!!
Once you use one, you'll never go back. And being the creative type that you are, Frannie, I think it is right up your alley. I bet there is an Apple store in Lexington or Louisville (don't know which one is closer to you). Drop in, & ask them to show you around.
Good luck!

I've had 2 Dells, a Hewlett Packard, an ACER, a Toshiba and a Compaq - all laptops.

Got the Compaq in 1985, and it was bigger than a microwave (so, I guess it wouldn't qualify as a laptop, but it was advertised as a portable)!! Got the Toshiba in 1987 and it had a monochrome screen & 40MB hard drive (that's right 40MB!!). The ACER was issued to me at work, and it was a DOG! The first Dell was good, the Hewlett Packard was better, and this Dell I'm working on right now is great! 17" monitor, about 12 lbs, can multitask, and it can double for my own little movie theater! People complain about the keyboard, but I think it is just a matter of getting used to it. I love my laptop!

I travel for work and I have a bluetooth phone they come with a keypad =no need for the laptop anymore...I don't have to be plugged in to be online and it fits in my pocket.

I take photos with it and record too!

Ours is a toshiba from Costco. We love it. The only drawback with laptops is that the keyboard is a tad smaller so it is easy to "fumble" a bit when typing. When I am at home, I just hook a fullsize keyboard onto it though and this solves that problem. Also, I need a mouse, not the silly finger mouse. I just fumble with that too! Goodness, after writing this I realize I am rather a bit of a klutz! LOL!

I am a Mac-girl! LOVE my MacBook that I just bought over the summer - so easy to use, and you really can't beat the Apple reputation and service. Yes, it costs a bit more, but it really does so much that is *fun*! (check out the mac vs. pc ads here: http://www.apple.com/getamac/)

Like Mary Ann, I reccomend IBM as well. My computer that just crashed was a thinkpad. I wore that puppy out. I had it for years. Before that I had a Dell Inspiron. I didn't like it. It crashed when i installed Windows XP.

oh lordy .. such great advice. i've heard great things about dell ... hmmmm .. what is a 'cafeteria approach to components? i've not had problems with my gateways in all the years i've had them (well, except for the one's that "I" have created!) but when that happened .. there was NO service from gateway!

the salesman recommended the gateway to me .. said it does what all the others did for 'my needs' that i told him about. and for less money. it is also 'lighter' than most of the ones i picked up. will check a few different stores today.

you gurlz are great!

i'll ask about the wireless card.

Right now I'm typing on an IBM. They cost more, but they're the most used in the business community for a reason-- they're workhorses. They're made from a tougher shell and can take the drops, bangs, whacks, etc. I had another IBM before this one, and I outgrew it before I killed it. Before that I had a Dell, and it croaked before the warranty had expired. We sent it back and they were great about the repairs, but before long the same thing happened again (the keyboard went out). We have a Dell desktop that's done very well for us, so I'd still say they're good computers; but I haven't had good luck with their laptops.

Hubby has a couple of IBMs, and also has an HP that he uses for trading stocks. He likes it because he can read newspapers on it. The wireless card is internal, which is great. (Mine sticks out of the side a bit.) It's a monster and cost like it, so unless you're going to do heavy duty databases and numbers crunching, it'd probably be more than your needs.

I'd also recommend you get a wireless card and use your laptops like satellites to your desktop. We have a Linksys system, and it's great! I can take my laptop outside on the deck, under a nice shady tree, or out in the pasture, and be totally online and completely cordless. You can also access internet easily with this in places like Starbucks and some McDonald's, just by being there.

BTW, people in the industry will recommend against Gateway. They use a cafeteria approach to their components, buying and building on a least cost basis. So it's difficult to get consistency from machine to machine.

Just more info to throw into the mix!

Wearegetting a Vaio laptop after the new year. We have two and as ou know mine crapped out on us and Rob's monitor is shot. We have a vaio desktop and love it so the vaio laptop was a no brainer. Our camera is sony as well, so we are all for compatibility. While we have a desktop that works, it doesn't carry the internet. Explorer is busted (we are getting it cleaned out and re -done this weekend) we want the laptop for portability. The battery life on laptops is getting better and better and will be good for long roadtrips, which we take three of each year.

WE took a look at the vaio this week and it is really reasonable, I think, I think it was like 1249.99 or something like that. Loads of memory, etc.

I have a DELL and I love it. we had a freak issue with the screen when we first got it and they mailed us a replacement OVERNIGHT!!! Customer service is always great! We also have a Dell desktop that we have had 5 years and I recently had a software problem and didn't know who to call so I called Dell and they walked me through the process. We bought our laptop last december through their online site and got a GREAT price and a free color printer included. we just made our house Wireless so we can use both the laptop and the desktop (and the playstation) online at the same time. The convenience has been wonderful!
