Hi Farmgirls,

So I have this cute little chalkboard hanging in my kitchen. I've had it for years. Originally it was from "Rue De France" catalog. Remember them? They went under in 2004, but used to carry the best French country home accents. Anyhow, my chalkboard has cherries at the top. I used to write our menu for the week, or grocery lists, etc. on it. However, it's as if the "chalkboard" part has worn off. It's too "slick" feeling to write on. I can't get the old chalk dust off no matter what. No kind of chalk works on it anymore. I've tried cleaning it, oiling it, erasing it, etc.

SOOOO... I am thinking I need to "re-chalkboard" the chalkboard part. (Don't you live my new word? Hee Hee). Would chalkboard paint be a good call? Has anyone used this? Any pointers? Any brand you like best? Any advice is appreciated!

Farmgirl Hugs,
Nicole

Great job Nicole! Did you know you can buy chalkboard fabric? You can write on it. Great for the top of a buffet table so you can write what's in the food. Nancy's Notions carries it on line.

So Farmgirls, I FINALLY got around to doing something with it. Here it is:

I really LOVE how it turned out, and of course, got turned into a chalkboard paint monster!

Thanks for all the advice!

•Prime your board with more chalk. This sounds counter-intuitive, but often your chalkboard problems can be solved with this method. Wash the board with a wet sponge and allow to dry completely. Rub a stick of white chalk (using the side) all over the board, then erase. This could solve your problem by adding a little chalky grit to the board for the writing to adhere too.

•Switch brands of chalk. Many cheap brands of chalk are poorly made and are too oily. Try switching to a higher grade of chalk and your chalkboard may work better.

•Try a chalk ink marker. This is a marker that looks like chalk but applies with a marker. Works on chalkboards, glass, plastic and metal. Wipes off with water. It's cleaner and easier to use than traditional chalk

•Refinish your board. If you've tried everything else, it may be time to refinish your chalkboard. Chalkboard paint can be purchased as a can of paint or as a spray paint. It is found at home improvement stores and the paint departments of most discount stores. You will need painter's tape to mask off the chalkboard's frame. Chalkboard paint applies like any other paint (see Resources below).

I don't know about that, CJ. I will have to post a pic so you all can see my dilemma.

Nicole,
Could you use painters tape on the edge to keep it from getting painted?

Thanks for the input, girls! My board has a decorative strip around the edge. I'd like to preserve that if I can, so I think to do that I'd have to buy non spray form? I'll post a picture of it to show you.

Has anyone else tried to use the chalkboard paint on a chalkboard?

Nicole

I used chalkboard paint on a cabinet door "sign" in my kitchen and it works good. A little hard to clean off, but I don't change mine very often, usually once a season I put a new design on it.

Nicole,
I used spray chalkboard paint to make signs for my Farmers Market booth to write prices of items on with colored chalk. It worked great!

Nicole...I personally haven't used any but my son did a chalkboard wall for his wife in their kitchen.
And it really turned out Awesomely!! And I don't remember them having any issues with it...so I would
re-chalkboard your chalkboard. I do think the spray on would work for you because your board is probably
much smaller than a wall. With spray you have less control over it however.

Good luck and let us know how it works.

hugs and smiles,
Peggy

I have made chalk board paint and now I see that they have it in spray cans I like it both ways it is not as cleanable as the real chalk board but is very serviceable.
