I've have a darling little vintage carry on suitcase and have decided to do a little decoupage on the outside. The trouble is the inside which is intact-is pretty filthy. Lining I believe is silk or a rayon / silk blend....Any suggestions on how to go about cleaning it up?
I had baking soda inside for well over a year so it doesn't smell at all, just really, really dirty.
I don't want to have to "rip" the inside out-want to maintain the historical integrity of the piece, but jeez I just don't know what to use to clean it!
Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated....

Melody,
I've redone several train cases and some bigger pieces. I understand you not wanting to tear out the lining . . . I don't now of anything that will really clean it. Grace has offered some good suggestions, I believe.
I have successfully replaced lining in several pieces. If you decide to do that and want suggestions, let me know.

here are 2 easy ideas for revamping the interior...
(these are photos off of face book)
re-cover the inside with fabric or lace...etc...
I thought this was pretty clever... tear up piece of a brown paper sack,,, decogauge it on... then seal it...

oh and also, keep in mind,,, they were made with card board for the inside lining stabilizer... so don't soak the fabric when cleaning...

Melody, I just re-looked at your photos,,, is only the bottom yucky? if so,,, why not just replace the bottom fabric with a cute contrasting print fabric?
for example, if you are decorating the out side w/decopauged roses.. why not us a rose printed fabric for the interior replacement...
just a thought...

Melody... unfortunately the interiors are a tuff nut to crack when it comes to cleaning...
but... you might try using a spray on upholstery cleaner...(follow directions on the can)
if that does not work and 'spot cleaning' doesn't work... your last possible option is to use a 'fabric dye' that can be brushed on..
and of course last but really not that difficult (just time consuming)... is to remove the interior fabric...
if you go on 'facebook',,, type in 'vintage train case'... there is a whole bunch of ladies who frequent this site... CeeJay and myself included...
