Well, for the past couple weeks my neighborhood, which is rural in southwest Colorado, has been all astir because of at least one bear that's been sighted . . . maybe more than one bear.

Our neighbors to the west and front of us have an orchard in which the bear has been seen as has its "contributions". We have seen contributions in our yard and in the road. One neighbor in the canyon just north of us has actually seen the bear and had to keep his dogs from getting too close.

Neighbors to the northwest of us, and not very far, had seen a bear getting into their chicken/geese feed, then their dog food, then tearing up their peach tree and eating the peaches . . . and crawling all over their car. Our neighbor drove his car over to our house to show us the muddy bear paw prints on the windshield, back window and passenger side and that the rear view mirror on the passenger side had been broken. (They mistakenly thought that putting the feed in the car would keep him away . . . not so!) Fortunately the broken mirror was all the damage done and they have moved the feed to a different location.

Neighbors all up and down our road have either seen the critter or evidence. About a week ago I saw a pile under our pear tree which is in our front yard, not too far from our house.

This pic is what I saw out my front window this morning, about 20 feet from the house. There is a tree root in the pic and just beyond it a very fresh "contribution"! Then the 8 foot high "game" fence and pear trees! Neither my hubby or I have actually seen the animal . . . yet.

Bonnie,
Mountain lions are also in the neighborhood . . . they are actually more concerning the bears! Right now the bears are busy because fruit orchards are FULL of apples and the bears like fruit!

CJ: we actually had a mountain lion (actually a cougar) that came not far from us. The police tazered it and drove it up north.

Have you all seen the bear on the news walking on two feet? He looks like a Halloween costume!

CJ, what are the laws in Co. Can you shoot a bear to protect yourself? I don't think I would ever go outside if I knew bears were around. That is my worse nightmare. We live in NW Kansas and periodically have sightings of mountain lions, including one in our alfalfa field probably 1/2 mile from our house. For some reason a bear is more frightening to me. I don't think we can shoot mountain lions unless they threaten us or our livestock. So far, I have not heard of bears. I hope they never come, I will freak out.

Night before last bear walked under our bedroom window, made a "contribution" by the lawnmower (just past the window) and came on around and across the deck and off to the pear tree. My hubby saw it walking across to the pear tree.

This morning (Weds.) another "contribution" by the corner of our deck.

I wish these bruins would finish tanking up on carbs and go hibernate!

I find it interesting that they seem to only like fruit . . . nobody's garden has been invaded by bears! Hmmmmmm

My hubby tells me this morning when we got up, "well, I saw the bear"! I asked him what it was doing and he said "walking across the deck". I asked him, "you serious?" Mercy!
Hubby says he got up about 2 AM to get a drink, looked out the kitchen window and because there's good moonlight, saw the bear walking across the deck, then across the front lawn and went under the game fence into the neighbor's orchard. Now that's a bit close for comfort!

Good grief! (this bear is a smaller one . . but still a bear)

We've been told that the big bear was on the highway about 1 3/4 miles up the road, got hit (two cars involved) and killed. Kinda sad!

HOWEVER, a smaller bear continues to visit the neighborhood. Fresh "contributions" in our yard this morning!

They roam about at night and have only been seen by some of the neighbors at night. There's an orchard in front of our house where they like to find munchies, there's an orchard across the road too. They'll get into chicken feed, dogfood, trash, etc.

Neither hubby or I have actually the bear, but in the morning we see fresh evidence that it/they have come through the yard. One must be watchful, no matter what!

In a mountain town not too far from us a lady in her 60s, who lived in a house up against the mountain, decided she'd feed the bears that came visiting. They came regularly and she fed them . . . she was warned NOT to do that, but she ignored the warnings. Eventually, the bears showed that they truly are wild animals, attacked her and killed her. Sad, sad story!

Oh my goodness, CJ!!! Do they come up into the yard when you're outside? That's so scary! They have had problems with bears coming into local neighborhoods here, and foxes, too. Scary stuff! I'd say shoot the furry invader and eat it, but when we were kids visiting my sister's godfather up in Maine, we got a good taste of bear meat - EEEYUUUUCKO!!! Just please be careful, okay?

LOL! Grace! That's precisely what my husband has always told our son! LOL!

OHMYGOSH Nicole!! That's too funny! Scary, but funny! :)

Be safe, CJ!

Yes, they are unpredictable. We, in the neighborhood, are actually more concerned with the mountain lions than the bears.

Yes, Peggy, they ARE wild and should be treated as such!

Fresh "contribution" this morning (Friday) under the pear tree! Our pears are starting to ripen and some are falling off the tree. If they are bruised or such we just leave them . . . . I guess for the bear! :D We do have deer coming through regularly and eating them too!

ROFLOL Grace!!!

Cj...If I were you...I would be very happy to NOT get an up close and personal viewing!!

My ex-MIL told the story that one time when her and dad were out traveling the Country they
stopped at a Rest Stop and mom looked out the window and saw these people standing around a
bear and feeding it and taking pictures of it. So, she grabbed her camera and headed on over
to get a few shots herself. And while she is adjusting her camera lens...she says to the lady
next to her...where is the chain that bear is tied up to? The Lady said, "What chain? It's Wild"
She immediately deemed all these people "Stupid" and got back in the car and the took off for a
little safer rest area.

Hugs and Smiles,
Peggy

Also makes me think of a funny story. A friend of mine who lives in upstate New York was watching a mama bear and two cubs at her bird feeder, from the window of her basement. The window was open, and she wasn't thinking anything but could she get good pics, so she whistled to get their heads to turn. Well, they all ran over to see what was in the window! She hightailed it out of that basement as fast as lightening! Moral of the story: if you whistle, they will come. ;)

Oh Dear! Our area has been all up at arms, too, as bears have been seen more often here and there. I have yet to see one, either, but know they have been around. I would die of a heart attack before one ever got close enough to harm me, though.

Be careful!
