So after that bout four years ago of poison ivy so bad it brought out shingles, I swore I'd be careful. Last Sunday, I was clearing invasive a before I realized sneaky poison ivy was in the mix. Thought I prevented it but nope. Nine days in I'm suffering. Using Tec Nu, baking soda, ivy dri...OUCH! Itchy and painful.

Thanks, Laura! You poor thing! My brother got it like that once. He even got it so bad once he had to go to the hospital - he was a policeman (retired now) and was on a call where the homeowner was burning in his yard and someone called because of the smoke. Well, it was poison ivy and he got it all over and in his lungs from the smoke! I too, am terrified of the stuff. I think it is starting to dry up, but what a pain!

Ugh! So sorry Nicole. When I was a teenager, I had poison ivy so bad it was even on my eyes. I remember that I went to the doctor and got a shot and that helped so much. I am terrified of poison ivy.

Hi Girls,
Thanks so much. It's bad, but at least I don't have the shingles that it brought out a few years ago. I've tried so much, but the humidity is making it worse. Baking soda baths seem to be the thing that has brought the most relief! I've got so much in the garden to work on, but I find little poison ivy plants everywhere so I am a bit afraid!

Oh Nicole, I am so sorry to hear of your battle with poision ivy.. my hubby has the same issue but with poision oak,,, we keep a bar of FelsNapfa bar soap on hand... for my hubby it helps sooth the itching when he rubs it on the affected spot.

Better than all of this is a salve that can be made from the juice of the impatiens plant (jewelweed). Just the juice from the stem will relieve the itch and promote healing. The salve will relieve all sorts of skin irritations including those caused by allergies.
The recipe is as follows:
Simmer a small amount of jewelweed in light vegetable oil (not olive oil - it burns) for 10 - 15 minutes. *Use only a small handful of the stems per quart of oil. If bubbles for, throw it out.* Strain out the herb. Add a handful of beeswax to thicken it and heat until it is melted. Test for consistency. Add more oil to make it more liquid or more beeswax to make it thicker. This salve is also useful for acne and keeps complexion clear.

Nicole, when I get poison ivy, I use only olive oil. For me, it cuts the burning and itching. Let me know if you try it.

Nicole try mixing vinegar with the baking soda to make a paste. The two together makes carbonic acid which is an old remedy for poison ivy.

Weird suggestions.... but might help.... have you taken benedryl? Do you have tea tree oil? The benadryl might give you some relief, though I can only take it at night, or I am OUT! The tea tree oil helps dry it out. Just don't apply too much, or you could end up with a secondary bacterial infection.

Thanks, Shannon. I guess I'm more and more allergic. Nothing seems to be helping. Last night I couldn't sleep it was so bad. I've got patches from head to toe, literally.
