i plan on taking lots of school supplies when we visit africa in january .. we will be touring 'boys town' ..and i'm sure that school supplies will be helpful. also want to take some gifts for women and men .. but want to limit the gifts to just a dollar or two because i want to be able to give to lots of people. of course, i'll hit the 'dollar store' to see what they might have.

because we are going on 'safari' and will be travelling exensively in small planes and vehicles, we are limited to ONE suitcase (and not a very big one at that!) and ONE carry-on for our entire month's trip there! i have to stuff these little prizes in with my clothes and 'toiletries' because of rules and regulations for 'carry on baggage'. so everything has to be small and flat-ish.

english is not really spoken there by most africans .. so books/magazines are probably not a good choice.

i can take cosmetics and sample size toiletries (toothpaste/floss/toothbrushes) .. combs, brushes, small mirrors, etc. will try and find some fun 'scarves' .. would take shaving lotion and razors for the men .. but i'm afraid the shaving lotion might 'explode' .. and the razors will look too 'suspect' in my suitcase .. i'm at a loss as to what to get for 'the men' .. anyone have any suggestions .. remember that small/flat/safe rule though.

Frannie,

I recall reading in mademoiselle magazine that schoolgirls miss up to a week per month from school in some african countries because they either cannot afford or limited availability of sanitary napkins and tampons. I don't know if this is a stupid idea or what but you could possibly bring some of those.

Amazing all the cooties out there. We are so spoiled and blessed here in the West.

All the places we went I wore boots too, except for the ocean of course. Even in September it was a bit nippy....ok really cold!!! But I wanted to come home and tell everyone I had swam in the Indian Ocean....how cool is that!?

Oh, and do get up once an hour to exercise the circulation as I'm sure you know. If it allows take and use nasal saline. It will help keep your nose from drying out and may prevent you getting sick.

anna .. a gurlfren told me this evening at dinner that the 'revenge' often hits us on the plan one the way home .. or shortly thereafter! we're staying in pretty good hotels and this is a very reputable travel company we're going with .. and they sure took good care of us in Greece .. sooooo .. i'm hoping they will do the same on this trip. (i swear . .if i'd read all those health precautions BEFORE getting all these shots .. i probably would have kept my butt right here at home!)

my friend skeered the be-jeezuz outta' me about my 'diabetic feet' and all the parasites that can enter through 'rough heels' and cuts! i'll probably wear HIP-HIGH COMBAT BOOTS! XO

(i had bought all kinds of smelly bath products .. but .. after reading info on smellies .. EVERYTHING will be scent-free that goes on my body! going to take my own PILLOW too! lordy! i'm not going to have room in that ONE suitcase for any clothes! xo

Well, Frannie, I just put in the mail some lip balms for you to take - I didn't have too many, but they'll help. And some cute sewing needle packs - they are all sealed up in cellophane wrappers, so maybe they'll get through. If not, share them with someone you meet in KY. I also enclosed an envelope for the Sweet Annie seeds - thanks! Judy And, hey! have a great time! Also, if you don't want to take DEET, Marge at www.naturesgift.com has a Skeeter Beater essential oil blend that is supposed to work really well for the wee buggers.

How fun!

I was blesssed w/ a trip to south Africa in 2000 just prior to getting married. The joke was i was on the honeymoon w/o the husband!

enjoy yourself and stay safe!!! I recommend a fanny pack for pass ports and quick reference items. Don't forget your camera a FILM!!!

In our group I met an older woman who at the time was a stranger and now is my "speudo grandmother". This lady IS a world traveler and I usually receive 2 postcards that detail her spring and Fall visits. When she knew about my upcoming marriage, she sent a hankie that HER mother had carried. I keep this in a safe place.

So you never know who you'll meet.

Oh, and watch what you eat as I'm sure you know!! I spent a good 6-7 hours on the flight home getting well acquainted w/ the plane bathroom! And this ISN''T the way I wanted to request 2 seats!!!

Hey Frannie- I will send you 30 or so lip balms and vaporsticks. the vapor stick is similar to the vicks vapor rub. I make it with tea tree oil and peppermint and they can use it when they are sick to ease congestion. Let me know if this sounds good and I will get it in the mail shortly.

i think i am being a little 'paranoid' because of all the 'precautions' (which, of course are very wise to follow) .. and the 'side effects' on the shots information papers!

but zillions of people visit second and third world countries all over the world and are just fine! i WILL wear those long sleeves and long pants in light colors though! and lots of DEET! i know .. chemicals! but in the long run, i'm hoping it beats getting malaria!

i'm very excited about our trip and will journal and take pictures the whole time to share when i get home. xo

You will be fine! And you will have a wonderful time. When I went to Nicaragua, I didnt have any of the shots b/c I was barely pg at the time and I was fine. Ate with everyone and all.

Peapodjane, those were great ideas too! Glasses would be perfect!

lip balm is a great idea .. will do that .. and i can get a dozen or so pairs of dollar store 'reading glasses' (that's what I use!!) .. am afraid a lot of 'needles' might make me look a little suspect in the baggage department of the airlines. as it is, i have to take about 60 needles for my insulin and 60 pen needles for my other insulin!

i read last night on the american diabetic association site that i should carry DOUBLE what i need in all my meds .. and carry them in two separate places (in case one bag is lost or stolen!) hadn't even thought of that .. have to buy a second 'blood testing monitor too ... at their suggestion!

went to louisville today and had my flu, typhoid fever and yellow fever shots .. arm is starting to get a 'tad' sore .. hope that is my ONLY complication! have to take malaria pills too the day before we leave and every day we are there and five days after i return. i was reading some of those 'possible' side-effects (yes .. even to the possibility of heading heavenward!) for a moment i thought perhaps i would rather vacation in one of our lovely states right here! but i really, really do want the experience of visiting other countries .. sooo .. i'm fulla' vaccines! health department told me that disease carrying mosquitos are rampant in africa and the shots were a necessity! whew! travelling sure involves a lot of planning! OH .. and we watched a video that said to NOT wear any 'scented perfumes, powders, lotions, etc.' cuz' mosquitos are drawn to pretty 'scents' ... AND ... they suggested we not wear bright colors cuz' they like them too ... i'm going on yet another shopping trip for this vacation .. going to buy ALL long-sleeved white shirts .. light colored (beige) long pants .. had some great little skirts i was going to wear .. but i don't want any pesky 'skitos' heading up past my knees! oh and the precautions about what you eat and drink .. how does anyone ever make it through these countries and come home alive??

i'm really not going to 'worry' about it .. just be cautious!

xo

Hi,
Lipbalm sounds perfect, there are so many different kinds, and forms nowadays, flat tins, tubes, etc. Also, I have a friend who is a doctor and went to Honduras, and one thing they took were reading glasses,I know they take a lot of space, so it's really just a comment,I guess. Would thread and/or needles be welcomed? What about those flat magnifiers that are not much thicker than a piece of paper and they come in different sizes?
May you and yours travel Blessed,

Two words...lip balm. When I went to Nicaragua a few years ago that is the one thing that was a huge hit...and its small which is nice too. Headbands, bracelets, mirrors are great. How much stuff are you going to try to make? A blogging friend of mine just got back from Africa and took a polariod camera because most people there have never seen their own photo. They loved it...esp. women who had just had babies. Can you imagine loosing a child there and never even having a photo of the baby to remember. Sorry, but this subject is near and dear to my heart. Let me know if I can contribute in any way. Scarves? Can I make one and send it to you? Or let me know what you decide on the small items and maybe I can send a few of those too?

hey gurlz .. it's my understanding (and i do hope that is correct .. might have to check this out) i think your 3 ouces of toiletry items are in CARRY ON baggage? i thought you could take shampoo/conditioner/lotion/suntan lotion/mouthwash .. etc. etc. if they are each in 3 oz bottles in your STORED LUGGAGE? will definitely check on it and let ya'll know!

i will be taking a month's worth of liquid INSULIN .. as CARRY ON .. i have my doctor's 'official note' stating i am an insulin-dependent diabetic and copies of the original prescriptions. we'll be gone for a month .. sooo .. i must take at least two vials of one insulin and several 'insulin' pens (liquid filled) .. AND .. we are told to carry all necessary medicines WITH US AT ALL TIMES .. in case our stored luggage gets lost or way-layed. these are absolutely necessary in order to SURVIVE for a type I diabetic. i will also double-check that!

Travel Learn told us that they have diabetic tourists with them all the time .. soooo .. i'm sure this is not a new phenomenon to the airlines. we will be gone for a full month .. so the necessary amount of meds are a NECESSITY .. and they happen to be in LIQUID form.

nancy gurl .. i haven't had time to even download all the pictures i took since getting home. today, our 'crew' came and completely took off all the wallboard in the BARN .. hank and i picked out a combination airconditioner/heater to be installed and some light fixtures .. and the wood for the walls. thought of putting more 'windows' in there cuz' honey hunk LOVES natural light .. but since i couldn't find any great OLDE WOODEN ONES .. i didn't like the newer ones .. was afraid they would take away from the olde look of the barn. think we've decided against putting those in. the 'schoolhouse' is so fulla' STUFF .. i'm thinking of just tossing a MATCH in there!

o.k. ... not REALLY! too many treasures among the 'trash'! if the weather would stay wonderful all winter .. i'd get to that project faster .. but it will have to wait until next spring!

the critters (cabin and creek) are doing great. we have neighbors who come check on them and make sure they have lots of food and water while we are gone. when we go to africa .. we will board them at the vet .. and i know they will be lonely for us. but TRAVEL is one of hank's retirement dreams. xo

New airline rules limit you to a total of 3 ounces of toiletry type items so I am not sure you can take those. Pretty much any liquid or gel is not allowed.

Jewelry, art, baskets, etc.

Frannie,
Sounds like a lot of good ideas, but with the new airline rules are you sure you can take these things? Or are there different rules with a tour group?
Still waiting for you to post some pictures of your visit with your daughter and the kids, and of all the remodeling of your out building. You were going to redo your , was it your school house? The place where you store all our stuff.
You sure can't take much with you on your trip, better find an outfit in a rather wild dark pattern that won't show anything, and you better really love the outfit.
How are cabin and creek, they must miss you when you are away.
