Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 11:30:48 AM Here's some food for thought. And I realize we are not all of the Christian persuasion, so please skip this if it offends...or not.
Before the hustle and bustle remember ....the X in Xmas still includes Christ.
I found this little ditty by doing a google search from "Anders Jacobsen's Blog" and I quote: "Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of "Christ". In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, "Christian". But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an imformal shortening pronounced ksms. Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits christ from Christmas."
The X is really the first letter of the word Xtos (XPIETOE) (the E represents a letter this computer can't make) in Greek is the word for Christ.

Posted - Nov 22 2006 : 4:53:20 PM I have always felt a little offended by people (especially businesses) using an X instead of the word Christ. I am glad to know there is a reason behind it. My mom ALWAYS does it ..never bothers to write the whole word out. I guess I should just calm down about it. I still don't do it myself, though. Just seems disprespectful or some such thing to me..for ME I mean.

I get such as good feeling whenever I visit this forum.
You ladies out there are the best!
You never know what influences we may have on someone. It's encouraging to see scripture in some people's signatures.
Let us continue to be salt of the earth and beacons of light in a troubled world. |

Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 7:41:06 PM Anna -- thanks for posting this. My hubby always gets offended at Xmas. He feels that it's being ireverent to Christ. I copied your post and emailed it to him.
Christ is the reason for Christmas. It's his birthday and our family celebrates it as such! Without Him there would be no holiday to celebrate.

Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 4:57:24 PM You do not offend me! Christ only makes me happy and assured! There is nothing to be afraid of in the word Christ! Even if it is shortened to an X!
Oh how I wish others would not be afraid or alarmed or even put off either!

Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 1:40:00 PM In Catholic school, we used X as an abbreviation for Christ when taking notes in religion class. I've always found the offense at the term "Xmas" a little amusing. Christ is certainly the first thing I think of when I see it. |

Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 11:44:44 AM yep my grandmother taught me that at about the age of 5 so I am use to it and have no problem with it. My husband doesn't like it written or said that way. I guess it is just how ever we are brought up as to what we like or don't like on that one.
