I found a beautiful blue and white dresden plate hand stitched queen size quilt-more of a light summer quilt at a church rummage sale today for $2.50! I want to wash it once all the mending is done-Thankfully, it is only coming apart at the little dresden plate seams so that's an easy fix, but it is so dingy. The background was made from a white cotton sheet-the prints used in the "plates" are still a very lovely grouping of blues-still bright.

Any good suggestions on what type of soap to use when I wash it? I am itching to use some bleach on it, but it is so tender and I don't want to risk splotching the prints.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated gals!

I love quilts. Diana is right, cold wash only. Hang outside to dry. Good luck.

I would recommend washing it soaking it in mild soap in the bathtub. Have someone help you gently lift it up while you drain the water and rinse twice. Lay it on some towels and put it outside in the shade on the grass to dry. If you wash it in the machine there is a possibility that the threads will start to break. when it is dry, you can fluff it in the dryer for a few minutes. Good luck. Old quilts are special.

Please don't use bleach on any thing that is older. It will tear up your material. I would go with a natural whitener like lemon juice for any spots and the sun. Maybe you could try some bluing for all over whiteness and brightening the colors.
