Posted - Oct 10 2014 : 1:44:24 PM Hi girls...
Okay... So... Question... Alaskan Cod: Safe or Unsafe in light of Fukushima? Would you consume it right now or not? I know it has been a couple of years, but it's not getting any better out there, that's for sure. I have done so much research that my head is spinning. I'd love to hear your take on it, and if you have any information that you think is pertinent, I'd really appreciate it if you would share with all of us. I asked my brother what he thinks, but he isn't really concerned since he lives so close to Maryland shores and fresh Atlantic fish is easily accessible.
I just keep thinking about Lent coming up. I know, I know: it's a while away yet, but it's coming. The fish we get around here - yuck-o. Suffice it to say, it's NOT a New England treat, that's for sure. And at Lent? At Lent, every fire hall and Catholic Church in creation has a weekly fish dinner, but it's akin to eating cardboard served in a styrofoam wrapper. Ick. And I'm willing to bet that that fish isn't from the Atlantic, either. Zaycon is offering a case of Alaskan cod at a really good price... but what is the TRUE price, if you know what I mean? I've never been disappointed by them before, but when it comes to Alaskan fish... I simply don't know enough about it to make a wise decision. And trying to sift through fact and fiction online can be quite harrowing.
(I wish I could just find a good source of Atlantic cod so I could just buy it in bulk and and keep it on hand in the freezer. If you have any recommendations, please do share!)
At this point, I'm thinking that the concern itself outweighs all. If I'm worried and can't find definitive answers, I'm thinking it's probably stupid to buy it. Pasta it will be! ;) But dang... I just don't know what to do and am hoping you all have some really great insight to help me decide.
Thanks so much!

Posted - Oct 16 2014 : 7:09:33 PM Thanks, girls. So much has happened since I posted. I have had a lot of input from family and friends. Oddly, many are just not concerned, or had never even considered this issue at all.
I did speak to Zaycon, and they have instituted a radiation free policy on all fish they sell. Further, the last delivery person said he lives in the tri-state area where the cod are harvested, and he isn't worried one bit - they consume all the local fish and they're just fine. He seemed to personally feel it's all a bunch of hype, but, as he said, that is just his own personal opinion.
The Zaycon company purchase their cod (and salmon, of which I am not interested) from the Tradex Company. Zaycon emailed me this statement from Tradex as an assurance that the cod will be safe:
"This statement is from Tradex – the company we purchase our salmon and cod from.
'The waters have been cleared for no radiation by the ADF&G, DFO, and third party inspectors. We are one of the first companies to implement Radiation Free product out of China as well.'"
They also sent me a link for a video from Tradex (dated 2013) regarding the issue:

I think right now I'm going to hold off on the purchase. It's always better to lean on the side of caution. You're both very right: so many concerns, and yet so may conflicting messages. As I said, we have never been disappointed with our Zaycon purchases - ever; however, I think for now it's better to just hold off. Time will tell. I'd rather just wait.
Thanks so much for your input - I really appreciate it!
Hugs -

Posted - Oct 16 2014 : 10:26:52 AM So DH decided to stay away from bottom feeders, because a majority of the particles will sink to the bottom of the sea. At this point in time, we look for local fish caught in rivers and lakes. We have consumed salmon, but very seldom. It's difficult to hear sound advice when there are so many voices shouting conflicting messages! But instincts are there for a purpose so I would trust those first!

Posted - Oct 10 2014 : 4:31:16 PM Nini I wouldn't do it! If you've researched the blowback of the Fukushima incident then I can't say anything you don't already know, but I wouldn't trust that it's safe.
