Don't you just love county fairs? It's one of my favorite things about this time of year. So far, I've been to three different ones this summer! One was a tiny 4H fair, but the drive was nice - lots of farms and scenery. The second one was the Bridgewater County fair. It's a medium sized fair and my most favorite. We walked around, saw the animals, and the kiddos rode a few rides. Then yesterday was the big Dutchess County fair in Rhinebeck, New York. We walked around for FIVE hours! It was perfect weather. We saw all the animals, watched the dock diving dogs, checked out antique tractors, talked to some very nice people, and had a really perfect summer day. My favorite animal was at the petting zoo:

Have you ever seen a little donkey like that? I hadn't. He was white with blue eyes. Donkeys have always been one of my favorite animals.

There are a few more fairs coming up. Not sure if we will make them or not. I never get bored going to one, though! What about you?

Nicole

Ours starts this Friday!! I came past the Argricenter-Farmer's market yesterday and it is so exciting to see all the trucks and food carts and rides being set up! The Big Red Barn is a permanent structure where the Farm Animals will be shown, They also have craft fairs and other activities when the fair is not here. They have Christmas trees for sale there beginning the end of November. It is just fun going to the Big Red Barn! LOL!

This a ribbon won by my Great Aunt Mattie in the 1960's. I just found this in some of her sewing boxes a few years ago and I treasure it!!

Hugs! Connie

Catherine,

I'd hear the same thing from my grandmother! And she was from Houston, too! Maybe they knew each other, lol.

I'm with ya', Nicole, on entering some competitions. Our county fair has an adult division and every year I think about entering. Just about the time I remember the fair is coming up, I miss the deadline on signing up.

@Nini, that is so dang funny about the sign over the donkey. I laughed so hard. It brought back a memory of something my grandmother would say. As a child, I was so surprised when she would say Jackass. I thought she was cussing so badly. She'd defend herself and say, "Well, it's in the Bible"

Oh, Nini, too funny, girl! I love donkeys.

Catherine, I hear ya on the food! We try to eat a meal before we go so we don't end up eating fair food, except for a treat. We did have milkshakes at the last one in New York, because they are famous and the line is around the corner. They are inexpensive and homemade with real ice cream and milk, and a tradition. The line moves fast. We had to see what the fuss was about. It was good, I'm not a huge shake fan, but it was tasty. Our county fair for 4H is odd...it's at the zoo, so no animals. We do get to get a discount to the zoo, and it is a fun little fair, but not much of the public comes. It is more for 4H'ers. One of these years, I want to enter my knitting, my jam, and my veggies.

I love them all - big fairs, little...

Nicole

Me, too, girls... And yet, I've missed it this year... Busy... busy... busy... I really need to get my priorities in line, huh?!

Love the little donkey, Nicole! How absolutely precious! At Christmastime, our fairgrounds hosts a country Christmas light show. At the end of the line, there is a live Nativity, and there is a little donkey there - so adorable. His name is Ditto. Every year the kids crack up over the sign above his stall. Even the youngest of kids tries to read the sign aloud; but even if they can't read, they've still got it memorized. It's the one of the most holy times of the year, and yet also the one time where the kids are allowed to say what they consider to be a swear word! "Well what," you ask, "could the sign possibly say?" It reads the same every year: "'Ditto' is a Jackass." LOL! Too funny!

My favorite part of the fair are the live demonstrations of crafts like ironworking, glassblowing, pottery making and leathercrafting... And I love going in to see all the displays of homemade goods, homegrown produce and handmade items - people are just so talented! To me, they ALL deserve a Blue Ribbon!!! <<I just wish they'd hand out copies of their recipes!>> :)

Hugs -

Nini

I love Love LOVE our local county fairs. I grew up showing animals and baking. My children have done the same. They're adults now and we still go and watch the judging of the animals even though we don't know anyone showing.

County fair food is the most unhealthy yet scrumptious stuff around.

My fave thing is to go to the rodeo nights and watch Mutton Bustin. I scream and cheer for those little kids. It Blesses my heart to see them step up with courage to ride a sheep.

The list of skills and character that kids obtain from participating in local fairs is just endless. Great preparation for life.
