Posted - Aug 08 2014 : 05:13:03 AM MaryJane posted this interesting article on her blog, raisinjane, on 6/8/14 about a new way that vintage cigarette machines are making a comeback. They are now selling original art! I was so intrigued that I looked up the link she provided about locations of these machines and lo and behold, we have on at the Appleton Museum in Ocala, Florida which about 40 miles south of my house. We have had a friend visiting with us all week and yesterday we decided to trek on down and see what it was all about. With hot and humid weather, an afternoon in the museum in the AC was the perfect activity!!

Here is what I found. Upside down of course because it was taken with my iPhone! But you can see how cute it is.
Each knob that you pull is for one piece of art from an artist somewhere in the US who is participating.
I was like a kid in a candy shop putting in coins and pulling knobs for surprises!!
Each piece of art is boxed in the same size box with some information from the artist and their work. Too fun! I ended up with a painting on a wooden block, a fused glass wall pocket and a mini quilt.
Check out the link to the locations and take a trip to visit your nearest Art-O-Mat. Let us know what you find and hopefully your posted photos will NOT be wonky!!

Posted - Aug 17 2014 : 09:46:03 AM I went to the one in South Haven MI this week with my mom, sister, and sister-in-law. It was SO FUN! We loved it and they were so happy I "made" them go with me. We all picked different boxes. I'm a little bit tree obsessed so I picked one called "little trees". Shea (my sis) picked "little monsters", and that was pretty cute. Roxanne (sis in law) picked a really abstract sort of 3D-ish painting under the title "mind's eye", and mom picked a very colorful painting of a carrot rocket ship with planets all around it. It was a lot of fun. If you can go to one close to you do it! My sister took pics, I will post them as soon as she sends them to me!

Posted - Aug 16 2014 : 4:39:30 PM This is so cool. There are a couple in Charlotte and a few up in Winston Salem. I don't live far from Charlotte, seem to be there a couple of times a month. I will be in Winston Salem next month and one of them is at a favorite eatery of my daughter, the Camino Bakery. Will check them out, looks like fun.

Posted - Aug 16 2014 : 07:43:22 AM What a superb way to repurpose something that used to spit out cancer causing cigarettes! I hope we have one of these here in IL. I'd love to try it out. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Posted - Aug 11 2014 : 06:36:14 AM I actually read an article about these machines several years ago. I looked up the closest one to me and its in Salt Lake. I have doctors appointments there in 3 weeks so I hope to get to the art gallery to buy some of the art.

Posted - Aug 08 2014 : 10:15:15 AM Erin and Marie, you definitely have to check these out! I can't wait to hear what you find and please post photos so we all can see your Art-O-Mat! For more information, just go to MaryJane's blog on the date I listed and read all about them. I think the idea is pretty awesome myself and lots of fun to see them in the museums. Plus, it is a good incentive to go and visit the art museum and see the latest exhibits and enjoy a nice snack in the cafe afterwards. It all makes for a very enjoyable afternoon!

Posted - Aug 08 2014 : 09:44:43 AM Holy cow! This is so cool! I've got to get somebody in our town to do one of these. What a fantastic idea! Thanks for posting this, Winnie. I missed MaryJane's blog about it. I'm a huge fan of retro, and I love the logo on the machine. Perfect. |

Posted - Aug 08 2014 : 05:49:02 AM I'm going to South Haven MI tomorrow for a week for vacation (pretty much my favorite place on earth). I just looked up the link to find out where these machines are, and there's one at the South Haven Center for the Arts! I'm so excited! I'm definitely going to check it out. South Haven is pretty small so that really surprised me! Thanks for sharing Winnie!
